So, first, to anyone who may not know me, my name is Miranda. I'm planning on making my wedding dress (this is all in the VERY early planning stages, so I don't have any particulars) and I have the pattern picked out. It's lace over tafeta or satin or something of that nature, but I am having a hard time finding scalloped edge lace that I like. So, I have a couple of ideas.
I DID find a decent lace I like at Hancock fabric, but the problem is it's white and my dress is going to be ivory. The lace is 100% polyester, and I am hearing mixed results with tea dying polyester lace. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, I have checked Hancock Fabrics and JoAnn. They have inexpensive lace, but I always like to get more options... I just can't find many in Austin, TX. Are there any other Austin area farmgirls, or does anyone have any suggestions where I can purchase pretty, inexpensive lace? I am even considering an ivory lining with a very soft colored lace, but not certain yet. I'm open to suggestions!

Have you looked on ebay? I hate buying fabric on-line where I can't touch it, but sometimes you get really lucky on e-bay with lace.
If you're still unlucky, try looking for vintage lace sheers instead. Its yard after yard of lace & just might have the charm your looking for. :) |

I hate the idea of buying online, too, but you DID give me an idea... some times some of the antiques dealers at the antique mall have lace!! and it does go along with the "upcycling" in the magazine this month... I'll definitely be jotting that idea down!! thank you!!
Anyone else have other ideas?

In the Pittsburgh area there is a place called "The Fabric Place" They are wonderful at sending out samples and they have the mose exquisite things, expensive too, but super wonderful. Also, if you have a picture of what you are looking for I can look up at my fabric store, specialty laces a uber cheap prices.

Do a google for Needle Nook Fabrics, Anne the owner has a blog/the stores site. She hand dies lace for her store, she sells knits, and tricot, and specializes in fabrics for undergarments, namely bras. So has all kinds of colors of lace, and ALL kinds of lace. She doesn't charge for samples (she will mail you snippets of her fabrics/lace) but I'm not sure if she charges for the shipping/mailing of them. Call her up though and see. I know for a certain she does a lot of mail orders, and I've been there when she was going around the store cutting off samples to send her mail order people.

Thank you all so much for all the input! I tried searching myself online but kept coming up with places that seemed shady, were too rich for my budget, or just did not have what I was looking for! I am so excited about the hand dyed option... my thought is to do ivory underneath with either a soft, pale blue or lilac lace.
I will update everyone as I find things, and send pics when I can!

| I would try thrift stores (goodwill, salvation army, church thrift stores, etc) and antique type stores. Many places have old wedding dresses or fancy dresses and you might be able to salvage lace from those. I remember seeing goodwills that had racks full and sometimes they were stained but the lace and beading was still fine. |

Well, I found a store online that offers samples... nice BIG ones, so you can really get a feel for the lace. I fell in love with two of them, but one has silver in it and I just feel it would be TOO flashy.
Instead, I changed my idea up a bit. I was GOING to go with colored lace over ivory taffeta... but the scalloped edge lace I decided on is ivory! So, I am going to go with a satin from JoAnn in a color called Clearwater, and have the ivory lace over that (At least, that's what I am planning. I have to go look, first!). I also want a small train in the back of a coordinating organza or organdy, and multi colored "peacock" tulle.
I'm so VERY excited and SO greatful to you all for your advice and help! I'll be posting pictures once I start collecting the fabrics I choose!! HOW EXCITING!!!

Sounds like you made a good decision to go with a different color from JoAnn. My experience is that you can find some gorgeous fabrics at independent fabric stores, but it will mean paying for it too. I love love love my indie fabric stores, and I love JoAnn's its prices.

Funny thing is, with shipping and EVERYTHING the lace (6.5 yards of it) only cost me about $50. The Satin was on sale at JoAnn and cost about the same. Can't wait to get the lace!

I ran across J & O Fabrics www.jofabric.com and they sent GOOD sized samples, not tiny swatches, so you got a real feel for it!
