So, I was notified today (with a month before I have to travel-yeah, thanks State Department-I applied THREE months ago!) that my birth certificate isn't acceptable for my passport application and I have to order a new one from NJ. Ok, so...the expedited website they sent me to asks for my "current legal name"...and I know it should seem obvious, but why wouldn't they want my maiden name for a birth certificate? Has anyone had ANY experience with this? I don't want to mess up the order because I have such a small window to get my passport issued before my 25th anniv. trip...aaaaaack!!!!

First of all - CONGRATULATIONS on your 25th Anniversary, Christine! Awesome!!!!! I'm so happy for you! You must be very excited about your trip!!!

Now as far as the birth certificate... Hmmm... That IS strange... I mean, I can understand that they would request your current legal name if you were requesting your Social Security number, because with marriage and divorce one's surname can surely change.. But your birth certificate? Maybe they ask in case you were adopted and your current legal name is different from your birth name or something??? I don't know... Personally, I would call to find out why they are asking for that - just out of curiosity. But if you need your birth certificate, you're probably going to have to supply whatever information they need, you know?

Good luck - keep us posted! And congrats again!

I deal with the government quite a bit and it's probably either for security purposes or to verify that they have the right person (ex: Jane a. Smith, whose married name is Brown, doesnt get Jane a. Smith-Thomas' birth certificate).

Christine,
Gosh, I understand the frustration you are experiencing! I had a similar run in last summer just trying to renew my driver's license. Today documentation can only qualify under certain circumstances and we don't always know that ahead of time. I sure hope this all gets resolved for your passport and that waiting anniversary trip! Good luck and keep us posted on the progress. We are all cheering for a speedy resolution!

Maybe they ask that in case someone changes their name?

Chistine,
Due to the sensitive nature of birth certificate documents... I bet it's for mailing purposes. That is one thing they do NOT want to mess up.

Christine,
I also have a NJ birth cert. It has very minimum info. When I got my passport several yrs. ago the agent wasn't sure she could accept it. She finally decided it had all the info required & processed my application.
Good luck to you.

They can check your name with the Social Security Administration so they have to have your current legal name to make sure that the baby born in 19XX with your name was given whatever social security number and the the social security admin with say and she updated her legal name to be xyz in 19xx.

That is something I learned at the bank because so many verifications and such have to be checked with SSA

Thanks, Nini! Yes, we are pretty excited about our upcoming trip-we didn't have a honeymoon after we got married and this will be our first time away without the kids (well, the older "kid" is 19, so she's totally capable of holding down the fort!).

Thank you everyone for your comments-I feel a lot better about this now! I also talked to my sister who recently applied for a passport & she agreed with you Alee about it being tied to my social security number. Going to start getting this taken care of today-thanks for the support! The guys have it easy-my husband got his passport 3 weeks after we applied! LOL

Christine,
I believe Alee has given an excellent answer. They will want to make sure YOU are WHO YOU say you are and while they will want to document your birth with your birth name, that won't be the name that goes on your passport. It's pretty much about matching up SS numbers and getting the right person but with putting your "current legal name" on the passport.

CONGRATULATIONS on your anniversary! And your trip!!!! YAY!!!

Thanks, CeeJay!

I have an update, but it is so wild and wooly it can only be classified under "it would be far less painful to go over Niagara Falls (our destination) in a barrel than to obtain this passport" - I think by the end of all of this, I will have hit every government agency possible. LOL ... LOL what else can we do but laugh??

Well, here's the update: I ended up sending them my expired passport and a bunch of other documents w/a letter explaining the whole situation. Was told it was at the discretion of the agency whether they would accept that...they did! My passport card was issued and is in the mail...I'm so relieved that our 25th anniversary trip will go on as scheduled! Thanks for all the good vibes, everyone!

Thank you Lynette! We are headed to Niagara Falls! Neither of us have ever been there before, so I am really looking forward to it! Everyone I've talked to who has been there says it's wonderful! :)
