I went with my co-workers to the Zoo yesterday and volunteered all day on landscaping. Our zoo is in pretty tough shape. The previous director let a lot of things get really over run. There were at least 3 landscaping companies there with their equipment all day plus about 50 of my co-workers. It was amazing- and even though you could see progress- I bet we could do this 3 or 4 times over again before it would look the way it is supposed to!
Last night I was in a lot of pain because I pulled a muscle in my back pulling on a really stubborn weed. This morning it feels better but pretty much everything else is letting me know I got a good workout in. LOL I am really glad we did it thought!

I remember doing that with the company I worked for a few years ago. We pulled weeds and put down tons of mulch at the Kansas City zoo right before they had a big evening fund raiser. We were extended an invitation to the black tie event as a thank you for all of our hard work, but my husband and I couldn't make it unfortunately.

Thanks ladies! Yes it felt good to help and I think Nora and I might go back to help some more. It was a lot of fun to be part of such a big volunteer event. We only were able to get the first section of the whole zoo looking up to snuff, and there are acres of trails. Our zoo lost their accredidation with the National Zoo Association last year due to mismanagement, so the new Director is really trying to pull it around. That animals were all healthy, but the finances and the grounds are a disaster. I really hope they can do better now.

Alee, that's awesome that you volunteered to help tidy up the overgrowth at your zoo! It sounds like a big job, but what a great community project.
I hope you definitely go back, and do take Nora with you. Teaching kids the value of volunteerism and hard work at a young age will pay big dividends later in life! And what kid could possibly be luckier than her to have the opportunity to volunteer at the zoo?
Now you have a taste of what I do for a living (landscaping)! Even those of us who are in shape for that kind of work come home more often than not with aches and pains. But I think it's a small price to pay for the ability to see what you worked on all day. I don't think I could work in a bank or other office desk sort of job where you couldn't see anything change after a day of work. But who knows, I might be suprised if I actually tried it! Just haven't ever come across a desk type volunteer job yet....

Marilyn- That is so funny that you mentioned working for a bank because that is what I do! LOL It's actually mostly computer work but that it too funny. My legs are STILL sore, but I am glad- I need this kind of work and I love gardening so that is no hardship at all! :)
I was telling my Dad that I thought Nora and I should volunteer a couple times a month and he agreed that it would be good to start her volunteerism early. I know I learned a lot about volunteering from him and Nora is such a giving spirit already- volunteering should make that an even bigger trait.
I am going to call the zoo next week and see what they would like done and if we can help. They have so much that needs worked on, I am sure they could use some help painting or more weed pulling.

I work at at bank too, in the IT department. The place I worked at before where they did the zoo volunteering was insurance. Both are pretty dry, but I'll take banking over insurance any day if it has to be a desk job...it sure pays the bills and helps feed the critters, so it has its merits.
