My first time dry pailing soiled diapers turned out in epic fail and I need help!

Everything in the pail stinks of mildewy/musty smell and it's awful!! I used my normal laundry soap, added extra baking soda and borax to the washing machine and even rinsed it with vinegar and it didn't help! I NEVER had this problem in the summer when I wet pailed and I heard how it's supposedly easier to dry pail but I apparently did something wrong(I did have baking soda in the pail with the inserts and they still stink, it's like it happened over night!). Now, I"m scared I ruined over $100 in cloth diaper inserts!!!

What can I do? I can't put them on baby because even after sun drying them they still stink of mustyness. What do I do to save the diaper inserts? (They are BestBottoms). I have a sample of RockNGreen, will that take care of it? Help!

I've been using the Best Bottoms for almost a year and a half now. I use fragrance free Tide for cold water. Run them through the wash cyle with hot water first, then add my soap and start again. I bought a large bag from PlanetWise. When a diaper is soiled I rinse it in the toilet, then put it in the bag. There it stays for 2-3 days, usually 3 till wash day. As for the mildewy smell, maybe vinegar in the wash then let it soak a while. Hope you can get rid of the smell. I'm having a bad time keeping wet diapers from leaking to pants, in less than 2 hours. Are there thicker inserts, or any suggestions?

With Best Bottoms, you can double up on the inserts. I haven't had a problem with BB at night or traveling. My son was a heavy wetter and I'd have to use the biggest insert they had for the best bottoms and at night I had some smaller ones that I'd put in there too. WIth my son I folded a prefold diaper and put that on top the largest best bottom insert on my son and that prevented overnight leakage. Sure hope I can get rid of that mildewy smell, its so strong! Oh, make sure yips!ou don't ever dry the diaper covers, it ruins them and they won't work properly anymore. The inserts are fine to dry, although I like to dry them in the sun for extra bleaching power. I'll have to get a PlanetWise bag, I've been wanting one and maybe that will help prevent that nasty musty smell too. Anyway, thanks for the tips, I'll give 'em a try!

So far nothing has been able to combat that smell... I can't stand ruining the wonderful smell of a little baby with a mildewy smelling but clean diaper. Ugh.

Have you tried soaking them with lemon juice and water and then sun drying them? Anytime I have musty smelling diapers I did thist and it cleared it up right away. As a last resort you could do a mild bleach rinse and then sun dry them as well. Good Luck!

I soaked them in lemon juice and baking soda over night then I found my sample of RockNGreen and let them soak in that for an hour then I washed them and hung them out in the sun, it took that smell almost out... UNtil I started using the diapers and baby wet them, then it brought the smell back almost instantly and now the diaper covers smell like it too! I don't pail the inserts and the covers together, or even store them together so they must have acquired the smell from using them on baby? Can I use a mild bleach on the PUL covers?

Krystle- I think at this point you should go ahead and bleach everything. I checked some of my old cloth diapering resources and I found this thread helpful: these moms haven't had any issues with bleaching their PUL covers:

Boil just the inserts or the inserts and the covers? How long would you boil them for ?

I was going to say...boil the inserts or at least run them on the hottest washer cycle you have a couple of times through. Something you may not have thought of is that it may be baby's urine that is causing the smell and. It necessarily the smell coming back out of the diapers. Especially if you have a teether on your hands. Their urine can smell like ammonia something awful and there is not a whole lot you can do about it during that stage because no matter how clean you get the diaper it will smell like that again the next time you use it. Another thing that is very important in dry pailing is to keep the lid OFF. I know that seems like the opposite of what you would want to do with a stinky diaper Paul, but trust me...the bacteria will breed and stink more in a closed off pail than one that is breathing.

Oh...and I would probably boil the inserts for about 20 minutes. Don't put any covers in the boiling water. It will destroy the PUL and the elastic.
