If any of you have older relatives in your family that are starting to forget who people are - especially younger children... Please read my latest blog. It might help you find a way to explain what's going on in a way they can understand.
My son has Asperger's and sees the world in a completely different way than most of us. I think my explanation helped him overcome the hurt of being forgotten.

Lora--your blog was so insightful. My dad still remembers people but it's obvious he's living in a fog. It's like a heavy blanket draped over his mind. My grandma (his mother) didn't remember us grandkids towards the end but she always recognized her sister Mary. It's difficult to watch someone getting lost in the fog. I think you explained it to your son very well.

| I see so much of this at work, it is so hard for the family members, they just don't understand sometimes their loved one can't remember if the phone rings they are suppose to answer it, or any other simple task, but maybe an hour later they can do task. It's so sad some family members get upset with their loved ones, and you have to remove them from the room and educate on how what is going on, I feel so bad for everyone involved, its just very hard watching your loved ones slip away. What agreat way to explain this to him, Lora. I think all kids don't really understand how common it is for someone your grandfather's age to become so forgetful. My youngest has Aspergers (autistic) and also take sthings so literally that you really have to watch yourself giving explainations of things. The curtain response was PERFECT...
I also read your newst blog entry and want you to know not only do most of us feel that way sometimes, but live it as well. Don't ever think you are alone! Things will get better...HUGS! |
