Is here a real difference in Malt vinegar and white Vinegar? I need it for a salad dressing and can't get it in my little town.

In taste, yes. Balsamic, Apple Cider, or *maybe* Red Wine vinegar would be closer (better) substitutes than white vinegar would. :)

It's all up to your taste buds, my husband LOVES a malt vinegar! We like all kinds of vinegar, you CAN use white vinegar, but it won't have the depth in flavor as the malt, it will be a bit flat...Lindsey had good suggestions.

A apple cider vinegar that is really close to malt vinegar is Bragg's. It may be in your stores "healthy" food section. Our Krogers sells it here, along with most health food stores, and you can mail order it.

For a malt vinegar though if you really want it over apple cider and other more easily found vinegars, you may want to ask around your local restaurants and fast food chains in your area if they would sell you a bottle. I know for sure I have seen malt vinegar at Charlie's (a sandwich type fast food joint), and Long John Silvers....if you have any fish or seafood type stores or restaurants I would ask them to sell you some, cause I would bet they have a bottle or two, also at your local store look in the fish/seafood area it may be hiding there.

yeah the bragg's has a bit more depth then some of the regular apple cider vinegar, and I really really like it. Since it's organic, etc, I have been using it in my cooking even for things that call for white vinegar and I really like the "kick" it gives the food!
