Run, don't walk and get yourselves Patty Griffin's latest release, "American Kid". Appeals to the roots, the wanderlust and heartache in all of us. If you go to her site and hit the "menu" button in the center of the screen, you can listen and watch performances. She married Robert Plant (of Led Zepplin fame) back last Summer and he's collaborated on this album and his arranging and orchestrating is flawless. He and Allison Kraus has a magnificent album released a few years ago, too.

"Ohio" happens to me one of my favorites--and you can watch the video/hear the song. It's based on Toni Morrison's Beloved, which is based on the true story of Margaret Garner, the slave who escaped from a farm about 5 miles from my home here in Kentucky. She slit the throat of her baby girl in the river in front of authorities trying to recapture the family and take them back to slavery. She sacrificed her child so as to never be taken a slave again.
Most songs written in regard to her father who just passed, a WWII veteran who had lived a wild and transient life before settling down with her mom and raising 7 kids in Northern Maine. Just flawless.

I'd love to know what you think, Mary Beth--she's been a longtime favorite of mine and her songs, well, they completely displace me.

Jonni, she's great. I truly like that style. Have I heard her before I am asking myself. Where have I been hiding? I listened to Rain, Ohio and Mary-----I'll be listening all night. thanks!! MB

I'm thrilled Mary Beth. Thrilled! Thanks for listening. Years ago, I got free tickets to see Cheryl Crow from a friend. Patty Griffin opened for her...and I didn't even stay to see Cheryl Crow. How on earth could she top THAT? I've been a fan ever since and a few of her albums are, essentially, the soundtracks of huge moments in my life.
She simply transports me--my husband, a singer/songerwriter who I introduced to Patty Griffin when we first met 14 years ago, says:"she just slays me like a big ole dragon."
