I was talking to our next door neighbor about this and she said these guys came into their place too. She said, "Oh, you're the guys that make trees ugly"!
Well put!

I seriously laughed out loud at your neighbor's comment! That is just awesome!

Have you been able to reshape your tree?

Just about an hour ago I was out walking down the road and they drove by . . . too bad I didn't have rotten tomatoes to throw at them.
We live on a gravel road and there was a lot of dust from their truck . . . all over me! UGH!
Okay, like I said, I'm TRYING to let it go.

CeeJay,

I would be upset too, although there may have been a law that states how close trees can be to the lines. They did what is called "topping" and that can invite disease or insects, so watch the tree carefully. It is not good for the health of the tree to do that. Hopefully, it bounces back okay, but you will need to watch it for any signs of distress.

Wish I could give you a hug and a cup of tea!

Farmgirl Hugs,
Nicole

We,ve had the top of this tree trimmed before but they were careful and it was hardly noticeable. This isn't acceptable!

I know how you feel. Our old house was surrounded by 100-year old oak trees that were picturesque. The power company wanted to cut them down because they were growing too close to the lines, but I threatened to chain myself to them! The end result? Trees "pruned" (aka butchered) so they were all but a stump with a few scraggly branches left.

CJ, That is heart breaking. The tree stood for perseverance and it reassured you that you belonged there. If the tree could make it, you could certainly rebuild and flourish. You feel badly because you probably feel you should have been able to protect it. It was, by no stretch of the imagination, attacked. It was left very wounded, but still loved. It doesn't stand as the tall tribute to overcoming the fire any longer. So, I guess you will just have to nurse it back to beauty and let it stand as a bit shorter tribute to love.

So sorry for your loss, Mar

The power company does that around here. They will just ruin the trees going up and down the road with this machine that just chews the limbs off...Not even an even cut!! Makes me sick! Trees are so precious. It makes me sad to see them abused!! Beth

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, farmgirls!

I understand the need to keep power lines clear and am all for it, but it doesn't have to be done in a brutal, unattractive manner that impacts the growth of the trees, and be overdone.
Good grief!

When my folks started thinking about retiring from the Air Force they bought a little farmette just a few miles away from my fathers parents. While we were stationed at our last AFB we would come to the farm and do badly needed repairs on the place every weekend. One weekend driving down the huge hill that went by our place we noticed right away that all eight 100 year old Maples were cut to the ground in preparation for highway work. My mother cried and cried. I'll never forget that and how barren the yard looked without our beloved Northern maples gracing the front lawn. We were never notified of potential high-way construction and the workers knew we weren't expected and took advantage of the fact. It was a small town and everyone knew everyone and no one said anything about high-way work. It was a huge shock.

Ceejay I know EXACTLY how you feel dear....

Mel

The power company wanted to cut down my boyfriend's apple tree that was under the power lines and the power company rep gave him a bunch of grief about planting it there - until BF reminded him that the tree was almost 100 years old, and was there long before the power lines were. Then he asked why the power company put their lines over his tree - the power company guy, of course, didn't have an answer - but the tree didn't get cut!!

Encouraging story, Luanne. Unfortunately that's not our case. The tree could have been planted elsewhere . . . don't know why it wasn't, even though it's not directly under.

Oh my goodness! I was just scrolling down through this topic and actually gasped out loud when I saw the "after" picture. What butchery. Unbelievable. I hope she survives and that you figure out how to deal with it.

Just saw the post CJ...How heart wrenching to see something of such beauty butchered in this manner...I know that someway God will give you knowledge and inspiration to bring your tree back to a thing of beauty:):):)

Hugs!

Thanks girls for your understanding. I've been told I should register a complaint in the event the tree gets diseased or dies from this.
Still pondering . . .

So sorry for the loss of your tree in the winds. I lost 2 large branches off one tree here - one each of the last 2 years. There is not much left of it

And I HATE the way power companies cut trees "away from the wires." They butcher them.
