If anyone has any idea how to get dust off a textured ceiling.... I would be happy for any advise. I have to dust my ceiling fan, turned it off because it was really cold here last night.
I want to get rid of the texture, but thats not going to happen any time soon.

Denise, I have to use a brush attachment on my vacuum cleaner and just sweep across it using a short sturdy stepping stool. It is a real pain. Getting it re-plastered may not cost as much as you fear. Maybe at least get two quotes so you know what your options might be.

We always took a broom to the ceiling. Just be warned part of the "popcorn" will fall in your hair, face, nose, mouth, I think you get the idea ;)

LOL I can see that happening! I have a few swifter dusters I found in the back of the closet. I have been trying not to use them because they are scented with febreeze, ick. But desperate times call for desperate measures.
If they don't do the trick I will need to get the broom or the vacuum out.

Thanks, I was thinking of trying that. I did get the majority of the dust off the ceiling, but it can't reach above the bed and I think with my usual gracefulness the blow dryer might be a better option.

Well, Denise, I've found if you just let the dust go long enough, you'll have lovely cobweb streamers in time for Halloween! ;) Then you can just pull them down, or lightly spray paint them in shimmery silver and gold until after Christmas! LOL! And if you want to brighten your ceiling up a bit, they easily disappear into the texture under a fresh coat of paint! ;)
No, seriously, when we had textured ceilings, I just used the vacuum hose attachment and they were gone - easy peasy!

I've used a broom so much through the years the I don't really have a popcorn ceiling anymore because they all got knocked off. The ceiling is more like dots now. I guess I've made my own texture!
Nini, I laughed so hard at your creative uses of ceiling dust. Funny!

Nini, you crack me up! I wish I was that creative! I got most of it down and have vowed to not let it go as long as I did.....But when the fan runs who would know???
Catherine, I thought about that, but I didn't want to have to move the furniture by myself. Its bad enough when I have to flip the mattress, I always think I should let someone know I'm going to do it and then if no one hears from me I'm trapped!

We have a popcorn ceiling too and I hate it, so I've been researching how to remove it. Apparently it's pretty easy, though incredibly messy. All you have to do is spray it liberally with warm water, and scrape it off with a putty knife. It comes off pretty easy. But it's recommended that you take everything out of the room first, and put down a disposable drop cloth on the floor, that you tape to baseboards (especially if you have carpets). Then once it's all down, you just wad up the drop cloth and throw the whole mess out.
And then you don't have to worry about how to dust it!

I have been so tempted to do this. I can only imagine the damage I could cause! I'm not really graceful so I could get into all kinds of trouble, But it would be so nice to not have to deal with the blasted popcorn ceiling!!

Nini, you are a hoot!
We removed the popcorn ceilings in our house before we moved in. It was because of them that we decided to remodel the whole house before we moved in. It turned out to be the best decision ever.
If you do dust, vacuum or take on the removal work yourself please be sure to wear protective gear on your eyes, nose and mouth while you are doing so as there can be asbestos, metal flakes and other harmful stuff in the popcorn material. Ours tested positive for asbestos so we removed the gypsum board and redid the entire ceiling in the rooms that had popcorn just to be safe. We even had to take the debris to a transfer station that accepted "hazardous" waste. Ugly stuff on so many levels.

Okay, so this sounds like a lot of work but if you can reach it, I used to use a lint roller brush on mine. It took down the stray loose "kernels" and dust too. It just took a while. If I could have figured out how to rig it to the end of a broom handle and still roll I'd have been all set. It does work, it is just slooooow going. ;)

Denise Ann, just be careful when you use the broom. Our popcorn ceiling is old and when I used the broom a whole patch of the ceiling came off.

Now that the spring cleaning is starting, although I have a feeling winter is not done with us in Minnesota yet, and Easter is in March this year, I need to get back to this lovely ceiling of mine.
Jessica it would be great to try to rig it to something so I don't have to go on the ladder!!
Bonnie, that is something I'm concerned about! Of course I was looking at it again and saw some spots I had missed, if the lighting isn't just right I don't see it. Hope you are well.

The brand-spanking-new house we moved to when I was in 6th grade back in the late 60s had glitter embedded in the popcorn ceilings!!! Tres tres chic.

Marilyn,
One of my friends growing up had the glitter in her ceiling, I was so jealous. Our house had the plaster ceilings, which were just not as exciting, but now are really nice, and no popcorn! I would love to have those ceilings again.
