Just sitting here with my cuppa and enjoying this issue.
When I came upon the story of the Love letters.
Just took me back to when my husband was in the Navy and we wrote each other most everyday. He was on a submarine so didn't get mail until they surfaced in port somewhere. I remember how he would come home and the letters that were written towards the end of the trip would follow him home. He would see us before he would get those letters but he always opened them anyway and read each one.
This story just made my heart jump a little when those letters showed up for the couple in the story.

Thanks so much for this fantastic issue and all the fun ideas for Valentines! Have already picked out a few things to make and do.

Denise, That is so nice to have wonderful memories. And to read the article that brought back the memories. I got mine in the other day and need to sit down with a cuppa tea and read MJF. It always has great articles and tips along with ideas.

Our latest issue of MJF is fantastic! When I see one in my mailbox, I can't help myself to just start digging in and looking at what is inside. Most of my issues get read a few times cover to cover because I always find little tidbits I missed the first go around.

Kristi,
Tell MaryJane it worked! In fact, I read it to my husband so we both were prompted to remember and of course it led to a great conversation. "Do you remember when...." Sharing those memories and how the days seemed to drag when we were apart and couldn't wait till we could move near family and settle into one spot, etc. My cuppa got cold but both our hearts warmed from talking about those days.

Denise - I can empathize to a degree. There is something special about those letters written to loved ones, especially those overseas. hubby is Air Force, opposed to Navy, but there have been numerous deployments/missions. Due to his job, he would be TDY to one location, but was never consistently there, rather flew in and out... so I would send letters to that one address and he would get it when he went back there... and mail his to me. When a letter was received in the mail, everything stopped, no matter what the kids and I were doing, and we just consumed his words.

Thanks MaryJane for bringing to mind heartfelt letters that kept our family close, even when we were far apart!

I know what you mean Shannon. In those days I lived for those letters. After all he was in faraway places that I would not get to see. Everything stopped until it was read. Usually it was read over again a few times before the next one came. We didn't have computers or even cell phones back then so the phone calls were few and far between because of how little they would be in port and also how expensive it was to talk for those few minutes. Everything I wanted to tell him was forgotten because there was only time enough to tell him that the children and I were fine, who started walking or talking or had the chicken pox or lost a tooth and yes, we missed him and loved him very much. I have a funny poem one of my girlfriends gave me when we were leaving one of our duty stations and it describes the Navy life of a wife quite well.

Loving a Sailor
Loving a sailor is not always gay
and loving a sailor is a high price to pay.
It's mostly loving with nothing to hold
It's being young, yet feeling old.
It's having him whisper his love to you
It's whispering back that you love him too.
Then comes a kiss, a promise of love
Knowing your watched, approved from above.

Reluctantly, painfully letting him go,
While your dying inside from wanting him so.
Watching him leave, eyes full of tears,
standing alone with hope, dreams and fears.
It's sending a letter with the stamp upside down,
to a faraway love in a faraway town.
It's going to church to kneel and to pray,
and really meaning the things that you say.

And though you know he's so faraway,
you just keep loving him more each day.
Being in love will merit your dreams,
with thought of heaven where loves light gleams.

Days go by and no mail for a spell,
you wait for a word bearing he's well.
The letter comes and your filled with joy,
you're like a small child with a shiny new toy.
With fingers that tremble, and heart beating fast,
you tear open the letter and read so fast.
Yes, he's doing well and he misses you so,
and it's filled with the love you wanted to know.

Weeks are a month, and months are a year,
you are waiting for the day when you will have no fear.
Time passes slowly, yet it's gone very fast,
you're barely aware that it's here till it's past.

Yes, loving a sailor brings bitterness and tears,
loneliness, sadness and dependent years.
Loving a sailor isn't much fun,
but it's well worth the price when his time is done.
Remember he's thinking of you every day,
he's sad and he's lonely for being away.
So love him, miss him and try to be braver,
and always be proud of loving a sailor.
