Got the e-mail I have been waiting for - MJF garlic is ready to ship. I ordered a lb and will be working this week and into next to get the beds ready. I am planning on dividing the garlic between several beds so they will get plenty of sun. Beds will be in front and side yards. The backyard is mostly shade. Since the seed garlic was grown in Idaho and I have no idea how they will do in Texas so by spreading them out I hope they will have a better chance of making. There will be enough bulbs to share with sisters too.

Super excited for you!!!! I had hoped to buy some this year, but with not moving until the middle of October, we decided next year would be better! Looking forward to seeing your harvest in the Spring/Summer :)

Shannon & Dawn I am excited. Looking through my Preserving Italy canning book last night I found a recipe for pickled garlic scapes in oil and MJF garlic has scapes. I didn't know what scapes were until I read the recipe. They are the long swirly green stalks harvested in the spring. They can be eaten fresh too. Milder garlic taste.

I seem to remember a MJF recipe for using garlic scapes. I will have to look back through her magazines and sister issues to see if I can find it.

Take a look at some Scandinavian recipes for garlic scapes too! They use them quite often in spring recipes. Have fun exploring recipes and pickling, share your results with us on those too please.

Thanks Dawn. I like trying something new. I went on line and printed out info on scapes plus 7 recipes.

The second site crashed my laptop but it's okay now. Called computer guy and he told me to take out battery and restart it - it worked. I get in trouble ever once in a while with a bad site.

Will play it safe and look for Scandinavian recipe books on Amazon.

Oh I love garlic. I put it on and in almost everything! Garlic bread is my biggest addiction. I have desperately been wanting to grow some garlic but I will have to pass this year. I will for sure be growing some next year! Good luck with your garlic and may you get plenty!

I received the garlic today and all I can say is "it's the most beautiful garlic I have ever seen". A very deep purple color and heavy bulbs. I am so happy I decided to order it. After I plant this batch I will decide if I want to plant more.

Shannon, I will be posting as I plant, harvest, and use the garlic. I know you are looking forward to your new home where you can have your chickens again and garden. I remember the trial you had with your former neighbor over chickens.

Sara,
I'd like to hear about your experience with garlic as well! We used to have some years ago, but it's no longer "living". We should grow it because we use a LOT of garlic!

CeeJay I have planted garlic on and off in the past. Year before last I planted 50 cloves from the grocery store and harvested it as green garlic as I cooked with it. I will let the MJF garlic mature. The scapes can be harvested in the spring. I am collecting recipes for scapes. I would like to plant a bed of grocery store garlic to harvest green but may not get around to it. My want to often gets ahead of my can do.

Garlic finally planted this morning. Hoped for rain on Wed but it has been taken out of forecast so guess I will water garlic this evening.

The cloves are big and beautiful. Averaged seven cloves per bulb. Wish I had more sunny spots to plant more garlic.

Had to replant two cloves this afternoon. Squirrels dug them up. Nasty little rodents.

Good luck and let me know how it goes! I've tried to grow MJF garlic in Texas for two years and I've never had a harvest. I'm in southeast Texas, so I don't know if they got too hot, too wet, or not cold enough :(

A couple of my garlic has spouted because of prolonged warm weather so I will cover them with leaves before a freeze. A couple of years ago I planted 50 cloves of store bought garlic and harvested them as green garlic as needed. Green garlic is garlic harvested before making cloves. Has a milder taste than mature garlic. By the heat of summer I had used all 50 bulbs. My neighbor's tree grew and shaded that bed so I can no longer grow 50 cloves of garlic.

When I lived in north central Texas I grew elephant garlic which did good. I am now in northeast Texas along the Red River. My sister lives about fifty miles northeast of me and she still grows elephant garlic from a start I gave her thirty years ago.

Hopefully my MJF garlic will make it to maturity. If it shows signs of heat stress or other problems I will harvest it as green garlic.

All my MJF garlic have spouted 3-4" tall. I never did get the beds covered with leaves but they survived 12 degrees and snow so they're hearty. Hope they do as well in 100+ heat this summer.
