Thank you, Jana! We still have a bit to learn. Here is what I know; it was built in 1830, it is 4 rooms, 2 up, 2 down. Technically, it is called a Log Home, not Cabin, but that is what we call it! My husband's great aunt and uncle bought it in the 60's as part of their original 90 acre (eventually they had 241 acres, before it was divided and sold in the past year) farm in Charlestown, IN. We know people lived in it until 65. It is not plumbed or wired. As cabins would have had in that time period, it was sided in wood siding until sometime in the 80's when my husband's dad and great uncle thought it would be cool to remove it so you could see the logs (150 years and it was solid, because it was protected). By 2007, it was caving in. My husband's great aunt and uncle had it rebuilt to the tune of 75k. Still, with no siding. Now, less than a decade later, the logs are showing significant rot again. We plan to side it, but we paid cash for the 49 acres of the farm we got, so we are trying to figure out how to budget in everything that needs done. It will be one of the first things we do. We really would like to put period correct siding back on, but the maintenance and upfront cost is so great, we aren't sure. We are considering a couple of other options, concrete formed siding, that has a great woodgrain look to it and vinyl that has varying shades to look like naturally stained wood.

You should go to the county recorder and see if you can pull some history on the property, also your local library may have some old record books or newspapers. The place looks gorgeous and it would be hard not to be fascinated with the history of the place; who built it, what brought him/them to the area, was the property always used for farming, was the wood and stone used from the property or area near by, etc.

Very interesting, Alicia! Your cabin looks intriguing and it was cool to hear its history. I can't wait to see what you decide to do. I bet it is a super peaceful place to spend your time.

Actually, Jana, I plan to! I just haven't had time, yet. I did make it to the local library late last fall. That's where I found it in a historical book. Matt's great aunt and uncle told us it was built in 1850. It was neat to find out it was 20 years older!!
