Hello Farmgirls, I'm getting excited about our garden this year.I don't know for sure how big our garden is but it's big..Due to circumstances I didn't get everything I wanted to plant put in.But this year I plan on planting it all. Tomatos, zucchini, corn, lettuce, pumpkins, green beans, peas, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, watermelon, cantelope, asperigus etc. Towards the end of the season last year my chickens found a way into the garden, but they didn't do much damage. They were more interested in dust bathing. Soo hope they are too fat to fit through this year. I can't wait to start spending time in the garden. I hope to be able to learn to can as well, I think I have my husband talked into an outdoor cooking area. |

It is melting here. The water is not draining properly because of all the remaining snow and ice. The middle of the yard has a low spot where all the water collects. I am going to get a big bag of dirt and mulch to build up that area. I will plant creeping thyme there and let it spread. I may put down some bricks to place the fire pan on. I need to get a cover for the fire pan. I live in an apartment and we all kind of add our own "touches" to the yard. I do the garden and I wish someone in the building would help me. Someday someone who also likes to garden will move in.

Marie I like creeping thyme too. It is hard when you are the only one doing the gardening.
Alicia, I checked out your video. Love your farm and house.

Thank you YellowRose. When we get snow I have to shovel a path for them (chickens) to walk. If I don't they will stay in the coop.

Wow! Everyone is sure busy, and today, I joined in. We have 3 raised beds, 8x16, having scaled down from a failed larger garden (50x100 or more) that was filled with wood chips from the electric company trimmings and never thrived. These gardens were built on a gravel driveway, and filled with various soils, wood chips, chicken manure etc. But, they were dangerously low and needed some OOMPF! Sooo, we added several wheelbarrows full of fallen leaves, and today, we hit the jackpot with gorgeous, velvety (almost like sand) composted and aged horse manure from a local training facility. I spoke with the owner, and he said I am welcome to as much as I want, even the fresh manure, which would fill a truckload daily. I may use that in the fall when I put the beds to rest, but in the meantime. Look at my "black gold"!

Sara, I forgot about Herb Quarterly. I used to take that mag but sort of forgot about it. Will check it out again.
Alicia, your seed collection looks like mine. I can't resist buying new every year, and swore not to this year, then hubs surprised me at Christmas with no less than 15 new seed packets from Bakers Creek. Who am I to refuse new seed varieties?! LOL

Lisa great raised bed. Happy for you with scoring the well-aged composted horse manure. For a gardener that is a true treasure. Have you ever made manure tea? I read about it in a organic magazine but only had the manure once to try it. It was over 30 years ago but I think the tomatoes did really well that year.

Thank you Sara. Hopefully this year will not be as wet as last year. We had so much rain that I rarely had to water.

I love watching the doggies run free. I think your daughter's bone sculpture is ssssoooooo cool. She could be doing worse things than picking up old bones. That is something I would have done as a youngster. You go Isabelle!

Hi Alicia....
Love your videos. Growing up in the OC in So.Cal. didn't see much open space outside of the Pacific ocean. Both my parents were farm kids. The only time we got to see a farm was when we visited my Mom's sisters in Kansas and Missouri. My little girl would love to hang out with your four legged girls and splash in the creek.

This is a picture of the low spot in the yard. Because I live in an apartment, I am limited by what I can do. I am planning to get a large bag of dirt and mulch to spread around in this spot and plant some creeping thyme. I become so weary of seeing this lake in the middle of the yard.

Wow Grace, that is a lot of rain. Sounds like it may be looking similar outside here in the morning.
Hope you can get that filled Marie. Seems like the property should help you.
Hi Nancy!!! You are certainly welcome to come play anytime! ;)
Not much going on here. Tapped Maples last week. Gardening - wise, I am trying to decide the best way to keep the deer from eating all my work! Oh, and I am contemplating a hugulkultur bed for strawberries!
There are a couple of Maple Sugaring videos on my channel if you want to see! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6rAaWB8U8t13yBZCd-nwLA

For us FarmGirls in warmer climates check to see when your last frost date is. Seeds sown inside are usually sown a couple of weeks before that date. Seeds sown outside are sown after that date. Time can get away from us so lets make sure we know when to sow inside and out.
Some maps have my area in Zone 7b - others in 8. I tend to go with Zone 8 and my last frost date is March 18.
