Wow ladies!! I am SO behind. Things have been slower than expected for us this spring. I did get a few things planted last weekend. About half of the potato (2 rows, 70ft long), some peas, early greens, onions, etc. More going in the ground this weekend. I just started nightshades yesterday and today (should have been done about 2-3 weeks ago).
Can't wait to see what everyone's gardens look like! Here is a video of the start of 2 spaces we are planting. :) https://youtu.be/QUqqj17BQuI

Hi Bonnie....my bff moved to Minnesota a few years ago. We both grew up in Orange Co.Ca. She has been bugging me to come visit since she has been there. She says it is so beautiful. So I guess I am a little jealous too. I live in what is now considered low desert by the locals. We have four seasons, dry, drier, driest, and hotter than a George Foreman griddle.

Alicia, you're off to a good start with those seedlings. Well done.
All of my plants are doing good even with every other day of overcast skies. The spearmint, cilantro, sweet marjoram, sage, and thyme are ready to be used for cooking. A snip here and there will keep them in their containers. My rosemary, also a container plant, is used for cooking year round. It's been in the same pot for ten years and has survived drought, snow, and ice.
MJF garlic is coming along but no sign of scapes. Hopefully they will emerge in May. I have a recipe from my Preserving Italy cookbook for garlic scapes in oil.
The Texas tarragon aka Mexican marigold one of the few herbs I have in the ground survived the winter. It'll take hot weather before it really takes off so I can use it in cooking. Our summers are too hot for French tarragon but Texas tarragon is a good substitute.

Alicia my herbs are coming along nicely but slow - too many cloudy days.

I have all my spring plants up and growing except lettuce and spinach. I have a feeling that the chickens are helping themselves every time they poke through.

Nora that's a good size garden. You put a lot of work into it. Chickens do like to scratch and some times they do it where they shouldn't.

I have a volunteer pumpkin plant with blossoms. Last fall I bought one bumpy pumpkin for the front porch. In Dec I put it inside the fence, at the corner, in front of the cottage and forgot it. I was clearing that corner today and there it was a foot wide. Hope it sets pumpkins with it being a single plant.

Well, my only project this far has been my Basil. I planted it early for our Jubilee Herb project and now it is doing so well. Tonight I plan to make some pesto for pasta and then cut some to dry for this coming Winter. I love Basil in salads, sandwiches and in Italian sauces. The fragrance is rich and deep. Yum!!

We've had volunteer pumpkins before. As long as it produces both male and female flowers it should fruit! You can also help it along - if you had other bumpy pumpkins planted, look for male flowers and transfer the pollen into the female flowers with a Q-tip.

Alicia,,, artichokes are easy to grow but take a good 6months,,, but the nice thing is,, each fall I just cut the plant down just a few inches above the ground and mulch... by the 4th year the chokes don't grow very big,,, that's when I pull out the plants and start with new ones. choke plants are good for only about 4-5years.
As for how I prep them,,, I rinse/soak them for 5-10min in salt water, to get rid of all the lil gnatty bugs and to get the earwigs (pincher bugs) out from in between the top leaves,,(because I don't use pesticides), then I boil/simmer the chokes in salt water until they are tender when you insert a fork at the stem end. We like to peel off the leaves and dip in mayo... when we get to the heart,,, with a spoon I scoop off the 'hairs' and the eat the heart (as we call it)... Oh yummy!

Got my tomatoes and eggplant in today. I was so hot and it bothered me more than usual today. Even sitting on the front porch was uncomfortable today. Hopefully I can get the squash and cucumbers in tomorrow. I have to do beans yet also. Peas are blooming.
