Linda, VSM is the acronym collectors use for "Vintage Sewing Machine". Makes it easier to write, I guess, lol! When it comes to sewing machines, as with some other antiques, 25+ years old or more is considered "vintage", though many collectors feel it is more anything late sixties or older, as once you hit the 1970's the use of plastic in gears and then in the body of the machine started, and most VSM enthusiasts don't like plastic (how I got started with my obsession, in the first place, when my 20 year old plastic machine conked out). Machines 80 - 100+ are considered "antique", though many antique collectors only agree if the machine is 100 years old. Depends on who you talk to.
All my machines have names. :)

I had a meeting tonight and missed out on the final bidding. The 431G machine went for $415.00 - I would've gone a bit more, but probably would have gotten overbid.
There are a few Featherweight 222s and a white 221 that I am watching on eBay. I keep dreaming. Just what I need - more sewing machines. I need to get rid of a few of the ones I've got.

Hi Girls,
Word of caution on Ebay...If you win, make sure to ask the seller to pack the machine well, with extra padding, and always upright and listed as fragile. Many of the strongest machines do not survive shipping. Also, if they get turned on their sides, oil can leak into the motor and destroy it. I have had a Featherweight come from Ebay and it was packed great, but also sent one back as the shipper did not pack it correctly and it was toast with a burned out motor from the oil leaking. You can pm the seller at the time of purchase to request it is shipped correctly.

Hi girls...I haven't been on MJs for some time. I have been on the Singer FW site...I love it! I have 2..one my gmas, but it doesnt work anymore..my son found me one for Christmas a year ago..I haven't had time to mess with it much ..until I get my lil corner fixed for such.lol.sooo..can you imagine how happy I was to see FGs n FWs topic!?!!! I love the lil sassy Singers!! So glad you started this thread!

have you checked out the Shop Goodwill auction web site...
I have bid & won many items from them (in Spokane)
It's an on-line auction... and you can narrow down your search to location Ex: Spokane, Wa.. or item EX: Singer Sewing Machine
I have seen many Featherweights come through also Singer 222 and other..
Just thought I would mention it.

I just took a peek and there is a Featherweight in Ontario Calif., at $272 and one in Michigan at $142
There is also a 401A at $25 just to give you an idea...
sometimes the description id for a 'vintage singer sewing machine' instead of listing it as a featherweight...
Also,,, at some of the locations you can do a pick-up and that saves you the shipping fees...

just found 3 more on the SGW site..
1 in NV for $200
1 in MD for $200
1 in CO for $51
the funny thing non of them are listed as Singer featherweights,,, just as vintage singer sewing machines.

Hi Kathy and welcome.
I have a 'white' featherweight. I had a black one but sold it. I own many sewing machines including 3 form the 1800's that sew beautifully. The featherweight is a nice little machine.
I actually wrote a repair manual which features a featherweight in it's service steps. You can see that book along with others here: http://thriftyfarmgirl.com/
I also sell sewing machines and original sewing machine parts on the same site.
It's hard to pick a favorite machine, but i'm partial to the class 66, which include Singer 66, 348, 201, to name a few.

Hi,
I have a Featherweight that my husband bought on Ebay. He was specifically looking for a machine that was made in my birth year. I love it and it is my main machine for classes (unless the project requires more than a straight stitch). I have a Sew Easy table with the Featherweight insert and they make a great team to take on the road. My Featherweight is especially good for doing paper piecing. Great little machine and weighs only 11 lbs!

I have a 221 black Featherweight (1951); I absolute love it and use it a lot (especially for quilt piecing).
Attachments, feet and add on pieces are my passion. The machine will embroider, do eyelets, all types of button holes, gather, pintuck, rolled hems, bias bind, blind stitch braid, free motion stitch and a gazillion more!!
I also have other vintage machines but I'm not a collector; if I don't use them, I don't keep them |

I recently received an FW from a friend who's downsizing. I know it is unused for 2-3 decades, and is dated August 19, 1945. In lovely condition, but I think it sews very slowly. Is this a common problem with older machines, or does it need a good cleaning/servicing?

It looked like it was missing a plate, but I found it in one of the drawers. Found the bobbin case and several bobbins, and I think a riffling foot. If I can get my nephew to clean the metal parts for me that would be great. I'm curious to see how she looks cleaned up.
