April /May issue of the MJF magazine.... If you haven't gotten yours yet... don't delay.... Nicole aka texdane.... wrote a lovely article about vintage sewing machines ....
I enjoyed hearing about how she got her first vtg machine,, . sitting forlornly awaiting for someone to rescue it from a Thrift Store. I got my first vintage machine when I was 18, it was my Americam grandmother's White threadle machine.
But I always coveted those sweet lil Feather Weights and I finally got one, it was in a local ad in our mountin community... a man was disposing of his elderly mother's possessions as she was going into a Hospice type care facility ...
I would love to hear how others came across their Singer Feather Weight machines ...
Thanx Nicole for the lovely article...

My original one came from a friend. I just met some quilters years ago and they insisted I had to have a Featherweight. It was cheap for the time, $125. I've owned 13, mostly black, several whites and one tan. All were pretty to look at, all sewed beautifully. All sold over the years. My current ones were neglected, horribly-cared-for orphans. Didn't pay more than $50. Each has been cleaned, lubed and oiled. All sew exceptionally well. One travels with me, one sits in the craft room, one is used with attachments. It's pocked up due to a chemical spill which makes it look horrible, but, wow, can it sew. I'm just happy they are being used. I'll eventually part with one but it'll have to go to a home which appreciates it as a sewing machine, a unique sewing machine and the owner doesn't want a "pretty" one. They are unique and don't sew like other machines. I own a vintage Bernina that can totally outsew a Featherweight, speed-wise and will do other stitches. Berninas have their own stitch which some of us really like. The vintage Singers, including the FW, have a certain look to their stitch and I love that look. Can you tell I'm a real vintage sewing machine junkie? Nicole wrote an excellent article, loved it and all the photos. I live for each magazine.

Sylvia, alot of my quilting gal-pals back in Spokane use only their FW for sewing their quilts.... I think I read somewhere that the mint green colored FW were made for England... and the white ones for Canada.... that being said... I probably should research it to see if that is correct ... lol!

My first Featherweight was my mother's. She had paid $15 for it in college. I learned to sew on it and sewed lots of "me designed" Barbie doll clothes on it. I took it to college and sewed many a dorm sheet into a costume for a fraternity or other dance. It was used a lot in college. When I was pregnant with my son I decided to get a new Singer sewing machine. They asked about trading it in and I asked my mother. She said go ahead because them were goving me more than she had paid. We both were sorry later that I had done that. I got my next two Featherweights off of eBay - one for mom and one for me. When she passed away I got it back and now have the two.

I loved the article! I also loved the "5 Generations" article by Mary Jane with photos of the ladies in her family. I have a couple of vintage machines but they aren't Singers. One of them is cute little green Coronado, in a case, that I got for $5 from a local thrift store. It works but I just have it for decoration! CJ

Aw, shucks, thanks, girls! :)You all made me so happy to see this! I am so glad you liked the article.
I am hoping to finish something on my white Featherweight today, named "Snow White". I have named all the machines in my collection, isn't that a hoot? They are named after loved ones, previous owners, or just names that strike me when I see the machine. My DH is wanting to get a Glamper...I will take a Featherweight glamping with me if we do!
All my machines sew a bit differently, and I love that about them.
Linda, your story makes me a little sad. That sewing machine shop knew exactly what they were doing!
Thanks again, girls, you made my day with this thread. XOXO

Yes, Nicole - that was 45 years ago, but they knew they would get a lot more for it, unless one of the store personnel got it. :-(

My husband bought me the cutest little charm for a necklace with a vintage sewing machine in it. I will have to post a pic, you all would love it! I thought it was so thoughtful. It looks cute with my sisterhood and "hugs from MaryJane" necklace, layered. It was inexpensive (the best kind, imho), and just the CUTEST!
Diana, nothing haunts you like the vintage you didn't buy...especially a VSM!

My vintage sewing machine was Richard's Grandma's. There is a picture of it on my blog. Its in the back entry way. The last I knew it still works. I guess this is not a featherweight but I had to brag anyway. Nancy Jo

Ok, quick story... at one point I had well over 2 dozen machine 4 of which were not vintage... I had scored yet another one at a local Thrift... (1950 machine in console)... brought it home... unloaded it and brought it into the garage...phone rings, I answer, it's my neighbor across the road, this what I hear, "Grace... I thought Gary told you not to bring anymore machines home "... me, "he 's not the Boss of me "... she say's ... "bake me some scones and I won't tell him "... gotta luv nosey neighbors! Lol! On that note, She is truly a gem and we encourage each other to get into mischief! !! Lol!

My grandmother had a Singer treadle. I sewed on that until I got my first machine, a kenmore(by Sears). I am a quiltmaker and all of my friends have them but I never got one. My Viking#1 sews so well I didn't think I would need it. I gave my treadle to April so she could enjoy it too.
