In an antique shop in Noonday, Texas, I found this copy of an old photograph that I just had to buy. I have never before seen an old photo with quilts as the backdrop! On the back it says that this is the Morgan family in Arkansas in the early 1900s.

Why did people never smile in photographs? They all look so staid and unhappy.

That is so cool! Do you think either of those husbands helped with the making of those quilts? Just wondering why they were included in the photo.

Maybe just the entire family portrait? Not sure. LOL! I love the one on the right, but both of them have LOTS of pieces! And the Lone Star is nice, too.

Great photo. I read somewhere people didn't smile in old pictures because they had to be still without moving for several minutes for the picture to take.

I have always wondered the same thing, Linda. That is very interesting.
Those quilts are very pretty and must have taken a lot of time and work.

Very nice. Nice quilts. I have old pics,on both sides, and no one is smiling. Not even the kiddos! LOL! My fathers side had 13 and my mothers side had 6 and not a smile to be found. Could you imagine that today? Yikes!

The process of photography at one time took a long time to take the photo. Thus people were encouraged not to smile because they had to hold their pose for a long time.
Your photo is great.

Nice picture. I have several old pictures from the 1800's of my family and not to many smiles. Looks like the quilts are on the side of a shed or the house.

Linda...I love your picture! That is so cool!!!

Sara...that was interesting to know about why people didn't smile back then. I use to think they just
didn't have that much to smile about or they took picture taking extremely seriously! LOL

Hugs and Smiles,
Peggy
