What does everyone do for decorative plants outside their home?

We have space for 5 hanging baskets along our deck but this year we are doing just 3 to save on $.

We also have two big red ceramic pots we put on our front porch.

We went to Home Depot this weekend - in the pouring rain I might add! - and used a gift card saved from Christmas to purchase a bunch of plants.

Verbena, Bacopa, Sweet Alyssum, Lobelia and Vinca Vine were what we ended up with. And a couple of those tall spiky grass type plants that I'll put in the middle of each big red pot on the porch.

I need to go get some geraniums and then I'll put everything together.

What are others doing/planning?

Jaime, you have been a busy FarmGirl and what a great way to spend your Christmas gift. Your red pots will be showy on your front porch. Showy is a word my sister, Bobbie, uses to describe plants that catches her eye.

My front porch is long but doesn't have a railing - 4 black wrought iron posts. To sorta give the illusion of a railing across the front I have a picnic table bench stained black on each side of the porch. A large Boston fern sits in the middle of each bench. Rest of the year bird cages are on the benches.

For color in the front yard I have 2 pots of yellow Marigolds. Have lemon grass in a large gray enamel pot. All my pots in front yard are shades of gray. There are 5 pots on each side of the sidewalk leading to front porch. All different sizes & designs of sets of two so the sides of the sidewalk are the same. So there is some order to my planting madness. The pots hold thyme, Dutch irises, and a weed with wee yellow flowers. Yes, I dig up weeds to put in pots if they are pretty weeds. The pots are separated by MJF garlic, my grandmother's irises, wild violets and plants that were there when I bought my house. Have yet to identify the plants.

Along the east side of my house I have yellow lantanas. Have yet to buy two yellow lantana baskets to hang on double Shepard's hook in the midst of the lantanas. In the fall I will put the two baskets in the ground.

On the deck I have a red geranium, 4 small pots of yellow Marigolds, and herbs.

Jaime I have already lost one plant, my Clarey sage because I forgot to check it for watering and our high winds beat it to death. Between light rains and days I don't feel well I haven't worked out a watering schedule. This morning my spearmint was wilted. I watered it real good so maybe it will be okay. I will have to check on my plants every other day from now on.

It's a tricky time of year for plants!!! Even though it wasn't supposed to freeze last night we took in the plants that were the most withered from the other day just in case. Fingers crossed!

I love hanging baskets. I usually have one by the kitchen, one on the other side of the deck, and one on the front porch. Sometimes one on the shed if I am feeling ambitious. This year, I put one of geraniums right by the kitchen door...in less than five minutes, I had a nest of eggs in it! I am leaving Mama bird to be, love watching her going in and out.

Beautiful. Love the mixed baskets. They look great hanging across your porch. Lovely view.

I have one mixed hanging basket my niece gifted me for Mother's Day. The colors are rose & yellow. I have it sitting on a child's wrought iron chair in my front yard.

Very beautiful. Jamie, you did a fantastic job. They look perfect hanging from your deck. I like how much the red flowers just pop!

Thank you! Krista - I really like the red flowers too, but this year my eyes are just drawn to that deep blue of the Lobelia - but that looks so good contrasted with the red my eyes go back to the red - lol

Sara - You mixed hanging basket sounds lovely! I can picture it in that chair you described - so sweet!

Jaime, for me shades of red, yellow, and white are the colors which catches my eye. One basket or pot in any of those colors will "fill up" a space like no other colors can.

Jamie, your plants look beautiful. You definitely have a green thumb! Enjoy your tomatoes, amazing how quickly they have ripened for you.
