Hi guys! So I heard from my aunt the other day... she and her hubby were suppose to come visit mid to late July until the beginning to middle of August. They are traveling with their neighbors, who are headed to a family reunion in Idaho... The plan was for the neighbors to drop them off son their way out and then a couple weeks later to pick them back up on their way home. Anyways, they will now be here on the 11th of July... AND I will need to feed dinner to the neighbors as well... this is an additional 9 people... they are Ammonite... basically too Amish to be called Mennonites, but too Mennonite to be Old Order Amish. Added to my aunt and her hubby and my family, that is 20 people. I was thinking of doing a chili bar. Is this tacky? Basically I was thinking to types of chili (one with beans and one without.), rice, baked potatoes and hotdogs, and then toppings, such as cheese, sour cream, olives, jalapeños, and fixings for the hotdogs. Thoughts???

Shannon, a chili bar with all the fixings sounds good to me. A little something for everyone works well with a crowd. And by all means use as much paper goods as possible for less clean up. If possible do prep work the day before. The two important things are to feed everyone and not to stress yourself out.

I agree with you Shannon that a chili bar would be a great idea and a welcomed way to feed a hungry and diverse crowd. Plus Sara has an important point that you want to feed everyone but not get so stressed out that you cannot enjoy the company and time together.

Around here the Amish do a Haystack dinner which is basically the same thing. So I would say it isn't tacky at all.

Thank you all for the encouragement! i think that is what I'm going to do then!

Sara - I hadn't thought about using paper products. What a great idea! Because of the issues we have with our sewer, we do not use the dishwasher, and rather wash everything by hand. It will be so nice not to have that many dishes to wash, lol.

Christine - I don't think I've ever heard of Haystack dinner. Can you tell me more???

I think it's a good idea, Shannon. Sounds easy, simple and delicious. I have had Haystack dinner before but I'm not sure if it's the same as Christine's. So basically it's shredded chicken, rice, and gravy as the main part of the dish and then you add additional toppings on top such as cheese, celery, tomatoes, onions, olives, pineapple, cherries, and Chow Mein noodles. You just put everything in separate bowls even the rice, chicken, and gravy and everyone dishes up what they want.

If you are going to keep the chili warm in crockpots you might consider getting some of those plastic crock pot liners to save on clean up?

And you could also get some foil pans in varying sizes from the $ store to hold the other items on the buffet - or at least some of them - just rinse and toss in recycle when done.

Good luck!

For sure,,, crock pots and give your self a break and use disposable plates and utensils... no muss, no fuss...

oh and hubby and I are big chili and pasta lovers,,, I cook up pasta 'Bowties' and smoother them with chili and shredded cheese !

So here is my menu as of right now... Anything I am forgetting?

Two types of chili... one with beans and one without
Hotdogs, buns, and fixings
Rice
Baked Potatoes
Nacho Chips
Possibly pasta... we are gluten free, so keeping it warm, but not sticky or mushy can be difficult
Toppings, including cheddar cheese, goat cheese (a few of us are dairy free - I have a yummy jalapeño monteray jack cheese), sour cream, jalapeños, olives, guacamole, cilantro, green onions, diced tomatoes, and corn
Cornbread

Am I forgetting anything???

Toppings for cornbread????? What are you thinking? I was going to do rhubarb jam, strawberry jam, and honey butter as offerings. Do you have other suggestions??? And you know you are welcome Krista!!!!

That's perfect! I bet the rhubarb jam is delicious! Wyoming is so much closer than where you were before. We really should plan a meet up sometime. I just looked it up and we live about 8 hours away from each other...not bad!

Shannon, your menue sounds over the top! We had a chili buffet for my son's rehearsal dinner. By the couple's request. It turned out great! You are serving a lot more than we did. Good luck! And remember to try and have a good time yourself,#128522;
