Here in the South, a long time ago, the funeral homes would give out old timey fans for folks to use. There were no air conditioners in the churches back then and folks, it gets hot!! down here..and sometimes it wasn't even the sermons!
The handle was a piece of wood that looked just like a paint stirrer, which you can get for free at a paint store..
Sisters would fan away during the whole time and it would stir up a good bit of air!!

So, I thought we might like to make one!! An Autumn Themed Fan!

First of all, you will need a piece of sturdy cardboard, like the side of a cereal box or heavy cardstock. You will cover the front with an autumnal colored paper or even a piece of fabric with autumn colors would work.

Second, after covering the front of the fan, you could use trim to such as lace or eyelet to go around the edge. Even a doily would be a nice background for our fan.

Third, You can add either silk flowers or leaves of fall, or paper embellishments to decorate the front. Just please no regular stickers.

Fourth, you can paint the handle or leave it unpainted Attach it to the back of the fan with a good sturdy glue. Aileen's is a great brand of glue and can be found at Wal-Mart and craft stores.

Fifth, sign you name, add a date, and a note on the back of the fan.

These should mail out in a bubble wrapped large envelope and do fine.

The sign up will end August 7th
Mail out will be September 10th

Please do your best! You can google and find "old funeral home fans" to see the shape. The shape is easy to cut. An old fan would be approx. 8 inches long (the paper part of the fan) and 6 inches wide. then the handle would be added.

Sound like fun? Well, sign me up!

Ok Beth you had me at "old timey funeral home fans". I remember them from 1940s and 50s and boy the churches did get hot in our Texas heat.

I usually don't join in on swaps but too many memories with this one to let it get pass me and besides I cut and paste pretty good.

Hi Darlene, I do not know about that. It is something that came to mind (the decorating part) When you look for "old time funeral home fan" on google or your search engine, you should see what the shape looks like. I gave the dimensions up at the top for the top of the fan. Hope this helps

I got some handles, they are the large Popsicle sticks at 6 inches long, I saw some beauties on Pinterest but no directions. I will check You tube as well.
Thank you. It will be a surprise to us all and fun too
Thanks for hosting it.

What I do to make the paper part, Darlene, is to fold a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper longwise and make a fold. Then I trace or draw on to the paper on one side the shape of what I want the fan to be. Then I cut out both sides at once and once cut open it up and you have the shape of the paper part of the fan. Sort of like cutting paperdolls, just one piece, though! Hope this helps

Deborah and Nancy, I believe you make one pretty fan. That is the way it sounds to me. Beth talks about making one autumn themed fan...and the fact that you need a piece of cardboard to cut your shape from. Hope this helps and is correct.

Marilyn I understand it to be one fan too.

I used the cardboard back of spiral notebook for my fan. Sturdy and easy to cut.
