I am planting potatoes, onions and lettuce today. Who else is out planting and what are you planting?

I've got onions, peas, radishes, lettuce and spinach in so far. I don't do potatoes, can't seem to master wintering them over and they are so cheap in the store.

potatoes are fun, just because of the magic of them! A shriveled, sprouted spud fit for the compost pile can produce five pounds of edible food!

Barbara, I see your tag line...I've carried an alpaca in my car :-)

I use to help my grandpa plant and dig up potatoes! It was such a fun activity when I was a child. He would dig them up and I would grab them and put them in the bucket. Good luck with the planting of your garden!

Sara and Krista---you are right potato growing is great fun. This year we put in white, red and yellow ones to have a variety. There is nothing more delectable than a bowl of young potatoes with fresh peas in white sauce. As a child I could not wait to go to my grandfather's house and eat this special dish on the 4th of July. How I love digging potatoes---especially since my husband does all the work and I just pick them up. They keep all winter in our root cellar and in the spring I start cooking what is left as treats for the dogs. Sara---I love alpacas although I have never seen one. I know that they are very expensive. Transporting an alpaca in a car is definely much worse than transporting a goat--ha,ha. I am glad to know you did this so that I don't feel so weird about my goat transporting. And Krista you are so lucky to be Mary Janes niece.

I did put lettuce seeds in containers on my back deck last week. Then we got a cold snap and snow, so they will probably be delayed sprouting. Living in a townhouse limits what vegetables I can grow. I will wait until we truly warm up and stay that way, probably mid-May before adding tomatoes and green peppers into my other containers.

April is a promise that May is bound to keep.

Barbara, you have a root cellar? I love root cellars and wish I had a traditional one! I'd love to hear about yours!

Sara---my root cellar is not very pretty, but it really does work. My husband built it into the bank at the back of our car port---which is also the underneath of our porch. He made a small rock wall at the open side and piled dirt around it. He filled the walls with saw dust and covered them with thick sheets of plywood. Then he put a gravel floor and several shelves. It is about six by six. WE store cabbage, beets, potatoes and winter squash in it nearly all winter. We also store apples and late tomatoes to ripen up. From the outside it is very plain. But it works well and that is what counts. They are definitely worth the effort it takes to build one.
