I just started brushing my teeth with baking soda and LOVE it! My only concern is that I've heard it can be harmful for your teeth because of it's abrasive properties. Do those of you who use it to brush have any problems? Do you use it every time you brush, or just a few times a week?

Thanks a bunch!

I only use somehting on my teeth three times a week, and it is baing soda. I otherwise only use a toothbrush and water and rinse. We have some Toms on hand if I feel the need for toothpaste, but I usually don't. Grace and Zoe use the Toms and Rob does the same thing I do. I do use the BS only three times a week because I am fearful of the abrasivness. I have sensitive teeth and I dont want to hurt them even more, but I also do not want to use chems on my teeth. A lot of toothpastes have anti-microbials in them and I CANNOT undersand why one would use such a thing in their mouth of all places!

I've been doing some searching on the internet and find very conflicting opinions on this matter. I came across a few sites that listed the RDA, or relative dentin abrasivity, of different toothpastes. The FDA recommends an RDA of less than 200 and the ADA recommends an RDA of less that 250. A toothbrush alone has an RDA of 4, baking soda has an RDA of 7, and the commercial toothpastes listed have RDA's of 30 to 200. I'll have to do some more research!

In the Tightwad Gazette there was an article about this. Amy states that a dental hygienist told her that you don't even need toothpaste, you can just as effectively clean your teeth by just brushing them for five minutes with the brush only. I haven't tried this as usually when I brush my teeth there are either a 3 and 6 yr old under my feet or a 9 or 12 yr old wanting in the bathroom! In my next house I want my own personal bathroom. lol I use Tom's and like it. I have really sensitive teeth and my dentist said using flouride will help seal the lil holes in teeth that make them sensitive. I don't like using flouride but haven't gotten the courage up yet to give it up. I've made my own tooth powder before using baking soda and salt whizzed in a blender and flavored with a few drops of peppermint oil.

Blessings....

After I posted this last night at work I went and put my nose back in the book I was reading called American Indian Healing Arts and I came across and old Indian recipe for tooth powder. Although, I'm not sure how they would have had baking soda, but maybe they did.

1 Tbl baking soda
1/2 tsp sea salt or kosher salt
1/2 tsp allspice, powdered or ground fine
1/2 tsp sage, ground fine

Blend all together in a small glass or ceramic dish. Store in a shallow nonmetal container with nonmetal airtight lid. To use, sprinkile a pinch of the powder on a wet toothbrush. You can also place a dab of fresh aloe gel on the toothbrush first.
To use as a mouthwash, stir a tsp of the mixture into a cup of warm water.

I'm going to make up a batch of this and try it out. It will be different having the allspice flavor instead of mint.

Blessings....
Sarah

It doesn't exactly say other than this.

My mom used baking soda all her life and had all her teeth when she died. Not one cavity or anything either. But maybe her genetics played into too.

Anyone remember Pic-co-pay tooth powder?? I loved the taste of that stuff when I was a kid.

Happy Trails :-)

I have used baking soda for about 8 years or more. I mix in some myrrh powder (health food stores usually carry this) and peppermint essential oil and I haven't had any problems, nor has my dentist mentioned any bad effects. I use it twice a day. I have been a _little_concerned about the abrasiveness issue, but won't worry any more. Judy

Thanks everyone! I'm going to continue using it. I'm also going to make a tooth powder with baking soda; sea salt; tee tree, sage, and peppermint essential oils. The sage eo is a little pricey, so next time I might try ground sage. Whatever I do, I'll never go back to using Crest and the like. After using natural toothpaste for a few years and now using baking soda, I can hardly stand the taste of it! And people think baking soda tastes bad!

laura-thanks for this thread. i just went and did the search for a site with RDAs for different toothpastes. when i was pregnant with my first child, my toothpaste made me throw-up every morning. that is when we switched to tom's. and i just saw that it has a low RDA-whew! also, not to long ago we were visiting family and i didn't have my toothpaste and had to use one of the "leading brands" ooh, i thought i would gag!

I have only just got 'round to trying the homemade baking-soda/salt/peppermint-oil tooth-powder. I love it and I'm ecstatically happy that I won't have to deal with $7 health-food-store toothpaste any longer, nor the rubbish that the empty toothpaste tubes created. Hurray for homemade things!

Interesting post. I had an aunt who lived to be 84 years old, she had all her teeth and used baking soda everyday to brush her teeth. I do the same. Sometimes I rinse with a little peroxide which my dentist says doesn't hurt to do ocassionally.

Do you need to dilute the peroxide when you use it, or just as-is?
I've been meaning to do this, but can't remember...

I use it straight from the bottle ~ I think the bottle says it's 3% or so.
