Wednesday, on our way home from Shreveport, we stopped in Gladewater, Texas to browse a few antique shops. At the last shop, I found a vintage Boye Company Needles, Shuttles, and Bobbins case. These were used by the stores when they sold needles, shuttles, and bobbins to women who needed them. My metal case is in good condition, and had quite a few of the originial needles and shuttles that were in the case when it arrived at the store. My case had 10 shuttles, several bobbins, and 122 of the "flanged wooden tubes" that have needles in them. Most tubes have more than one needle and the shuttles are 6 different types. The more popular shuttle sizes are the ones that are not here, probably because they were put to good use by the women who sewed. This was not a $10 find, but I think I got a good deal. It was cheaper than most that were available on Etsy or eBay.

How were the shuttles used?

The shuttles are the bobbin cases in the vintage machines. The vintage bobbins are about 1-1/2" long and skinny and sit inside the shuttles. I'll take a picture and post it here.

What a great find! We lived in Longview for many years and i spent lots of enjoyable hours wandering the stores in Gladewater and Jefferson. Still miss Texas so much.

Karin - Gladwater is known as the "Antique Capital of East Texas". There are quite a few great antique shops there. One of the shops had a very neat, but also high priced, twin Murphy bed. I hadn't seen one in a long time.

Great find! Many of those old sewing store goodies have disappeared from the market.

Marie -
Here is the picture I promised: starting top left and going down and then from top right and down: Flanged wooden tube that each shuttle is in, a #5 shuttle, and a #5 bobbin. (The lid of the shuttle tubes has the shuttle number on them.) Flanged tube and lid that the needles come in (note the top has a red 4) and 3 #4 needles. The tubes for the shsuttles are a bit fatter than the needle tubes.

LOL! And I love the Vintage Sewing items you find. I can't usually find them aruond here. We couldn't believe it when we found this. I Have since a few for a little less on eBay, but they were not in as good a condition or have as many of the original needles inside. I feel lucky to have found this one.
