I have had bad luck with growing rosemary in containers. They look great when I bring them home & plant them, then they slowly die off. I've tried to let the soil get a bit dry before watering in case that was the problem and it didn't work. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I live in a townhouse and can only grow it in containers.

Thanks,

Dawn sounds like you are watching your watering so that shouldn't be the problem. I grow rosemary in containers and in the ground and I pretty much treat them the same way.

Rosemary thrives in poor soil; no fertilizer; water when soil becomes dry but not baked; at least 6 hrs of sun; here in Texas it likes afternoon shade; it doesn't like to be fussed over which is one of the reasons I like growing it.

Rosemary has a deep root system so rule of thumb the pot should be at least twice as deep as the plant is tall. Rosemary needs to be repotted to larger container as the plant grows. My experience is every couple of years. You can keep it small by pruning.

I hope I have helped you and not confused you.

Thank you Sara! Great advice that I will need to follow. I use a really good organic potting soil that could be the culprit. My other herbs thrive, just the rosemary gives me a problem. I use fresh herbs a lot in my cooking and look forward to the summer when I can grow them outside. Nothing beats home grown!

If you have any old spent potting soil try mixing it in with your good potting soil to cut the richness or if you have access to plain soil that would work too. Don't buy cheap potting soil I have killed too many plants trying to save money.
