I tried making my own deodorant and the first time I couldn't use baking soda. It made my itch horribly. The second try at it I used arrowroot powder and I just did not like the deodorant at all. Has anyone else tried any recipes that seemed to work for them?

Hi, Lori. I don't have any success stories with this one. Every single natural deodorant recipe I have tried, all of which were made from various powders, has caused insane amounts of miserable itching for me. The only thing in the natural realm sold commercially that has worked for me are the deodorant powders made by Lush.

Rachel, do you like their deodorant? I have used their shampoo and conditioner bars and felt like they were horrible. They made my hair so coarse feeling and the tangles were unbelievable and caused my hair to rip out. I have been afraid to try anything else since.
Lori, I'm sorry your having a hard time finding a good deodorant. I hope someone here has a good recipe for you.

Thanks for your input girls. There is a health food store near me that I can get some natural deodorant from. I might try another recipe later but for now I'll just buy some.

Krista, I love Lush products. I haven't used their hair products for their actual use. Their solid shampoo bars, I buy like crazy, but I use it as body wash as I LOVE the smell of one of them. I am a "no poo" person in that I have naturally curly hair and only "wash" my hair with conditioner, never shampoo because it strips the oils from my hair. Lush's deodorant powder has been great. I think my favorite products are the sea salt facial scrub, the shampoo bar as body wash, and the toothy tabs for toothbrushing.

Lori hello. I was raised to believe that deodorant is unhealthy. Clean with rubbing alcohol and powder with corn starch. Refresh if needed.ziplock of alcohol cloths is handy.

Yes, alcohol does work. I also like Cleure Spray Deodorant free of parabens, fragrance, salicylates, formaldehyde, aluminum chlorohydrate, gluten, and alcohol. The ingredients are mineral salts and purified water. Cleure.com has many products that are fragrance and harmful chemical free. This works so well I only need to use it a couple times a week. I like that it is a pump spray too. I have multiple chemical sensitivities and I tolerate this deodorant very well.

Vicki, I don't use deodorant either. Only once or twice a month if that. I'm going to try the alcohol now instead for the times that I do!
Rachel, the facial scrub sounds nice! Maybe I will try that next. They do have really good smelling products, so that's why I was bummed about the shampoo. I'll give them another try with some other products. Thank you for your input!

I have a recipe that I found that is called an underarm detox. It has vinegar and rose water in it. I will check it out and let you guys know how it works. It seems like so many of the things on the market today are hazardous to our health and that is scary.

I do make my own deodorant. I really like it. 3T coconut oil, 2T bees wax, 2T baking soda, 2T arrowroot, tea tree, lavender.

Michele, this sounds similar to the recipe I tried. I did not use the baking soda. I made one a long time ago using baking soda and I broke out from it. I have been using rubbing alcohol but is this good for me to use? I helped a friend make gift baskets several years ago to give as Christmas gifts and made a hand sanitizer. Her sister used it as a deodorant and loved it. I have not tried that yet but I might.

I know this is a year old but I love this topic. Several years ago I had an allergic reaction to deodorant. It looked like I washed with brillo. I washed it off but what a miserable day at work! I switched to scent free, sensitive skin deodorant and was fine for a while. Then they apparently changed the formula and I started having problems again. I found a recipe for deodorant that works well but since quarantine I have been going without as much as possible. I wash the pits before I leave the house and hope for the best. I have also read that it is better to go without deodorant. Sweat is the body's way of cooling down and deodorant stops the sweat.

I do without deodorant most of the time; if you shower daily and/or don't do manual labor in the heat then it probably isn't necessary.
I make hand sanitizer using one third aloe and two thirds rubbing alcohol -- I never thought of using it as deodorant but I may give it a try.

I had loved homemade deoderant for awhile, but then it got itchy for us too. We have had success for years using EO deoderant spray - organic and does the trick. Bought the last bottles we have on Amazon. Have also found it on their website directly, in Whole Foods, and at TJ Maxx a few times. Blue spray bottle.
