I have a vintage kitchen and use all my pretty little vintage things, including my 1930’s electric mixer. I rarely fall for “gadgets”, but my parents sent me an Air Fryer and I LOVE it. Can’t live without it. Then I went to a pot luck at a neighbor’s and everyone raved about the Instant Pot. Supposedly, it takes the place of the slow cooker, rice steamer, pressure cooker, etc.

So we found one (on sale, very good price) and so far I LOVE it. My favorite has been the Chicken Veggie Fried Rice I made this past week.

Do you have one? What is your favorite recipe? What do you like about it? Any dislikes or tricks when using? Do you take it camping?

YUM!

Oh Nicole! Welcome to the Instant Pot club lol. I love my IP. And find a bunch of my recipes on Pinterest. I found one last week and decided to give it a try and it was absolutely delicious. I would say it's our family's new favorite! It was peppered beef. We also really love the IP fettuccine Alfred, taco pasta, lazy lasagna, chicken and dumplings, white chicken chili, cheesy ground beef and rice, ham and penne, and garlic Parmesan chicken and rice! I also make baked potatoes in mine and I found a couple desert ones I want to try. Needless to say I love my IP and use it about 3 times a week! My only tip is that you do need to run a white vinegar cycle every so often to help with the cooking smell that lingers with the seal.

We got our InstantPot a year ago and now I wonder how we ever got along without it. Amy + Jacky at pressurecookrecipes.com have many excellent recipes and tips for using it. Both of their recipes for baby back ribs are wonderful. They do a lot of testing for timing and sizes of food; one of which was how long to cook various sizes of sweet potatoes, which was handy for me as we eat a lot of them.

I have an Express Cooker which is Crock Pot's version of the IP. I love mine. My favorite meal is spaghetti and meatballs. I use ground turkey as I don't eat red meat. Even hubby the beeferator says it tastes great. I still have my Crock Pot I got at my bridal shower 33yrs ago. I made my doggie's stew in the CP the other day and before in my EC. It actually turned out better in the EC. My Sunny has allergies and shouldn't eat store bought food. He knows when I am making his food and sits in the space between the dining room and the kitchen and watches my every move.

I bought one 6 months ago and it's still in the box. Thinking about the old pressure cookers, I haven't gotten up the nerve to try it yet.

Hi Anne,
The IP is not your grandma's pressure cooker. It is so much easier. Find a recipe you would like on You Tube. I suggest Six Sisters channel. Take a step out on faith, have fun. I know you will do great!

Anne -- there used to be three things I was afraid of: rattlesnakes, lye, and pressure cookers. Nancy is right; InstantPot is as easy and safe to use as your crock pot or coffee maker. I'm still afraid of rattlesnakes though.

I agree about being afraid of pressure cookers. I have had them blow up on me and spew things all over the ceiling. Pressure canning about made me have a nervous breakdown and I won't do it anymore---my veggies go in the freezer. But if these are safe---they sound great. Must be great for cooking dried beans---RIGHT???

I'm so glad you posted this, Nicole. I have been on the fence about buying an air fryer forever because I am just not sure it is going to work (would love to use it for fish during Lent, most of all). I also don't really understand what an instant pot is. IS it a pressure cooker? How does it differ? If it really is as easy to use and really does make good homecooked meals in a jiff, and if it's safe cooking, I am really interested!

Thanks all for the encouragement. I love all types of dried beans, but they do take a long time to soak and cook. I'm with you, Barbara, I would like to try dried beans. Any tips??

Dried beans cook very well in the InstantPot; do the one-hour quick soak and about 15-20 minutes in the IP (time depends on bean variety).
It's fast, safe, and easy to use. We really like how it tenderizes game.

SO far, I have not heard anyone say anything bad about them! I got the “Pioneer Woman” version which just means it is “purty” on the outside, and has an extra book of recipes. It replaces my broken pressure cooker, and now I have carried my crock pots to the basement storage. May be getting rid of them altogether. So what it does, Nini, is work as a slow cooker, but you can brown everything right in it, so you don’t have to cook the meat, etc. in a separate pan. It slow cooks. It steams rice and veggies, and makes fast stews, meats, etc. It is for “wet” foods like stews, soups, rice, pot roasts, beans, etc. SO far, I love it.

Anyone here take theirs glamping???

Thank you for all the tips, girls. I am loving all the possibilities and the recipes!

Don't get rid of your crockpots/slow cookers too soon. I tried the slow cooking part of my instant pot and it doesn't get as hot as my crock pot and takes much longer.

Nicole, what have you made so far in your instant pot? I have only used my slow cooker portion of the instant pot for 1 recipe and I felt it worked great, but I haven’t tried any of the long all day cooking ones.

I love my insta-pot so much I bought another one. I have the 6 qt. for much of my cooking, but I also have the small one for small batches of rice, mashed potatoes, etc. it is the perfect size for the 2 of us. My air fryer is my other beast friend. These girls proved how quick, easy and delicious we can get good, healthy meals on our table quickly during our busy harvest season. By the time the semi's were all emptied I could have supper done.

Our local Library had a "Insta-pot cooking class" which was great... and... Our local library has several Insta-pots that can be borrowed/checked out for home use!!!

As for the class,, the lady giving the demonstration, had 5 insta-pots going and with in 1 hour we feasted!! (she had everything prepped at home,, just had to explain, toss in the ingredients and set the timers...

I still need to be a little more adventurous ....

I use it several times a week for making rice,as my dog is also on a special diet and rice is something he has to eat everyday. It works great for that! I also have used the sauté part of the IP and it works well, too, and keeps everything in one pot. I have to say my favorite new recipe is the Chicken Fried RIce dish - the family keeps wanting it made. SO much healthier than the take out version.

I agree with Julie about the air fryer. I couldn’t live without that yet. I am going to try making Split Pea Soup in my IP, as a slow cooker. So far no complaints. It is easy to use, though I think it took some”playing” with it to figure it out and what the best cooking times are.

Any other good recipe suggestions?

Nicole
