April 16, 1947
A freighter's payload explodes and wipes out Texas City
Ammonium nitrate fertilizer catches fire on a vessel in Galveston Bay and explodes, flattening much of the town of Texas City, Texas. The disaster will kill nearly 600 and wound over 3,000, becoming the worst industrial accident in US history.
I was five years old when it happened and remember people talking about the disaster years after it happened. From time to time The History Channel runs a documentary on Texas City.

Winnie and Heather, it was a terrible event but some good did come out of it. Monsanto rebuild their chemical plant with safety measures, so did the oil refineries.
Texas City was taught in my 7th grade Texas History class.

May 5th Cinco de Mayo Day.
Cinco de Mayo isn’t the same as Mexico’s Independence Day. (That’s Sept. 16.) The holiday celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862.

Never heard of that tragedy but I sure will look it up and get educated. When I was a little girl living in Philadelphia, I remember hearing my parents talk about a train coming off the elevated track of the Market-Frankford Line. For years the memory of hearing them talk about it was more like a dream to me because my parents seemed to be the only ones who were talking about it. But it did happen where an elevated train derailed at a spot along Kensington Avenue and a couple cars were dangling off the track with the front one resting on the ground below. I finally came across a newspaper article on it that had a photo of it. Why the Texas City tragedy you wrote of led me to think of this? I've no idea. I suppose it's because these things happened in the "world" we lived in, the immediate surroundings. In my case the derailment was not far from our home. Just a couple blocks away. But that tragedy you recalled? So many people died! I'm glad, though, that some good did come out of it.

Margie, whether it's an elevated train dangling in mid-air or an explosion that destroyed a city, stories that we hear as children seem to come back to us from time to time.

Women's Army Auxiliary Corps created
Proposed by Congresswoman Edith Rogers, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps is created so volunteers can perform non-combat jobs as mechanics, clerks, drivers, and more. Around 150,000 women will serve in the WAAC, later renamed the Women's Army Corps. The WAC will be disbanded in 1978 when all-female and all-male units are integrated.

There's a museum of sorts in part of a tiny airport a little ways from here that is building a B-17 bomber. Part of the displays are about WASP's - I wonder if it's part of the group you're talking about Sara. I can't remember for sure but I think it stands for Women Air Service Pilots. While the men were at war the women took over jobs like flying the planes around from base to base or whatever was needed stateside. There's some funny stories from some of the ladies!

Heather, I'm not sure but I think the WASPS were with the Air Force and the WAAC with the Army. I love to hear the stories of the women who served in WWII. I was fortunate to know two women who trained to be VA nurses during the war. The stories they could tell. They served here at home, and both retired in the 1980's. A neighbor was in the WAAC and after the war she became a schoolteacher.

My goodness -- was that really 42 years ago? I was working at a continuation school at the time and really wanted to drive up and see it (from a safe distance) but my supervisor wouldn't give me the time off.

Wowzers! We have areas in Washington that still show the scars from Mt St Helens explosion... My 77year old neighbor who was born and raised in Washtucna, west of Spokane, said that the
ash fall out reached her.. as evident by the ash dust on cars and houses, but nothing like the west side of the state.

Notorious outlaw couple gunned down in Louisiana.
A stolen Ford Deluxe is met with a hail of bullets as it passes an ambush of lawmen lying in wait on a rural highway in Louisiana's Bienville Parish. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow's car is hit by 130 rounds, and the FBI's most wanted criminals are brought down after a 2-year manhunt.
I grew up hearing stories about Bonnie and Clyde. We lived on California Crossing Road and Hwy 119 crossed it in far west Dallas County. Bonnie and Clyde used Hwy 119 to drive between Dallas and Grapevine to escape the Dallas sheriff. History was all around me and as a child I didn't know it. Not all the history was bad. Going west on California Crossing Road it crossed Goodnight Lane, named after Charlie Goodnight, who was a rancher who drove his cattle to market on that road. California Crossing Road was named after the pioneers who crossed the Trinity River on their way to California.
I do get round-up when it comes to Texas history.
