“I've had a few pets. My favorite would be my dog Calaloo. She was an amazing St. Bernard I had growing up.
I currently have 2 guinea pigs, Penny and Morris. I researched guinea pigs before I brought them home. I actually rescued Penny from a local shelter.
I wouldn't change having my pigs, but I wish I had gotten them younger because neither were socialized properly and so they are afraid of people.”

“I attended photography school and earned my associates degree. I learned everything from where the 1st photograph was ever taken to shooting in manual mode on my big camera.
During my time in school, I took hundreds of photos that pertained to my course requirements and weekly assignments. At graduation I complied a portfolio full of my work through out the 2 years in school.
When I started school, I had just had my second child. So needless to say it was not easy. But I stayed focused and dedicated. I graduated with honors! I absolutely loved it. I currently am working as a photographer and own my own photography business, Sunflower Photography.”

“I have actually been growing a herb garden for about 6 years now. I have been growing Aloe Vera, Rosemary, Oregano, Lemongrass, Tarragon, Mint, Chilies & Sage. For this merit badge, I specifically researched the benefits & uses of Aloe Vera, Rosemary, Oregano, Tarragon & Chili. I have used all of these herbs in cooking and the Aloe Vera medicinally. Rosemary twigs are a great substitute for wooden or metal skewers - lamb can be threaded onto the Rosemary twigs and cooked on the BBQ.
Through my further research of these herbs, I discovered that Aloe Vera can be used for healing minor burns, wounds, abrasions, and relieves the associated pain and inflammation. Internally it can be used for reducing levels of trigylcerides and blood sugar. It has a mild laxative effect. Rosemary has antibacterial & antifungal properties and helps poor circulation if rubbed on effected joints. As an oil it can also be used externally as an insect repellent. It is an excellent remedy for headaches if applied to the head. It is a good mouthwash for halitosis and is a good antiseptic gargle. Chilies are a warming stimulant that promote sweating, & are also a great source of vitamin C. Added to creams & ointments to warm & massage sore, aching muscles. In India, Chilli is used to stimulate the appetite of convalescents. Oregano is an exceptional antiseptic and broad-spectrum antibiotic, but also has potent antiviral and antifungal properties. It is taken against colds & flus, candidiasis, fungi, muscular pain including arthritis & fibromyalgia. My husband & I used oregano capsules as a prophylaxis when we travelled through Africa. Tarragon was formerly used for toothache; a tea from the leaves is said to overcome insomnia.”

I have used the Aloe Vera to treat & soothe burns. My mother always had an Aloe Vera plant growing by the tank and anytime we had a burn, she would break open the leaves and rub the inside gel onto the burn. I am now doing the same. I works wonders for reducing scarring.
Rosemary pairs well with mediterranean dishes and lamb. I use it both fresh and dried.”

I use all of the herbs in my garden either medicinally or for cooking purposes. At our church Advent Tea in December I tied up bundles of Rosemary and put a bunch on each guests' table setting. In Elizabethan days, the wedding couple wore or carried a sprig of Rosemary as a sign of fidelity. Also bunches of Rosemary were tied with coloured ribbon tipped with gold and given at weddings to symbolize love & faithfulness. We wanted to send a message of love and faithfulness to guests at our Advent Tea. (I have included a photo below) I have also given bundles of Rosemary to my fellow students when we were sitting our NTP exams. Rosemary strengthens memory and concentration as it stimulates blood flow to the brain.”

“I have always wanted to learn to perform on the Hardanger Norwegian Fiddle. One day in our consignment store there was one for sale and I bought it. I was so excited. I then went to a Hardanger fiddle camp, where I learned to play the instrument and found a teacher nearby to take lessons.
This instrument is similar to a violin but it has 8 strings and thinner wood. There are 4 top strings and 4 lower sympathetic strings underneath. This instrument was and still is used in southern Norway and the US for dancing events. The music form follows the dance form. The instrument is highly decorated. When playing you mostly play on 2 strings at a time. The violin bridge is flat compared to a regular violin so it is easier to play on two strings.
My goal is to learn a lot of the songs that the Norwegian Hardanger group of Wisconsin perform at different festivals.
The second part of this badge was to support two local music groups.
I went to two concerts. The first concert was the “Apollo Chamber Players” This includes two violins, viola and cello. This program explored the Croatian inspirations of the Father of the String Quartet, Josef Haydn and new music celebrating Croatian and Serbian cultural Heritage. Fantastic concert.
The second concert was held in a renovated Norwegian Methodist Episcopal Church. It is only open in the summer and gives concerts of the period of 1850’s. There was an organist who performed on a pump organ and we sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with the organ. A group of Rock Prairie Dulcimers performed many of the folk tunes of the period, such as Old Joe Clark and Cripple Creek. There was a flute duet of the more modern song “Hallelujah” and a recorder and Autoharp performing many American folk tunes.
The two concerts displayed the many genres of music that span a very long period of time. I certainly enjoyed all the wonderful performers and music.
This summer was a wonderful adventure of learning a new instrument to listening to many genres of music from many periods of time.”

“One of my favorite pets was a cat that I received when I was about 3 years old and was just about as big as I was. He was a Maine coon and around 20 pounds that we received from a neighbor's litter. He was my best friend and was with me for about 19 years. He allowed me to dress him up in my large doll clothes and wheel him up and down the sidewalk in my dolls baby carriage, wear him around my neck as a fur stole, slept with me, and chased away mean dogs. Since I've been married, we've had several wonderful cats and dogs, mostly labs or lab crosses, that each lived about 15 years.
Our current dog is wonderful. We chose each other at the humane society. We were looking for a smaller dog than our last which was around 100 pounds, and was very hard to carry when her back legs were having problems. The current dog is around 35 pounds, we think he is border collie and corgi. He is full of energy and pretty much goes everywhere with us as weather allows.”

“I’m a cat person, a dog person, and also a horse person. My husband is a dog person. Cats bother his health, so no more cats. Horses are a lot of work, require lots of space, and need to have someone to cover when you have to travel. We have a dog that travels pretty much everywhere with us. I consider him low maintenance, except he needs to run, so depending on where we are, we need to find a dog park so he can get out his fast running.
We love him and he entertains us and makes us laugh, so he is excellent for our health. We dog sit for our daughter's papillon.”

“With a pure bred you have a pretty good idea what they will be like when they are grown and the general personality. With a shelter dog, you can only guess. Some shelters do DNA testing, or you can do the DNA testing yourself and find out their breeds and any genetic problems.
We used to get pure bred dogs, but the last ones have been from the shelter and have been excellent. We have found that we choose the dog that chooses us and it has worked out fantastic.”

“I took different colored yarn and blended it on a blending board. On another, I took roving and spun it. I tried spinning both worsted and woolen. I got a supported spindle and made some yarn. At a historic event, we showed people how to spin using a spindle and a wheel.
The yarn came out very nice and I found I liked spinning on a wheel much more than on a spindle.”

“I plied using the Navajo ply so that I could keep the variety of the yarn from the blend board. I took a class in historic sheep fiber, and spun multiple types of wool. I spun angora, and I spun a merino wool, bamboo, and silk.
I’ll be giving some homespun yarn for Christmas gifts.”

“Weaving is multiple yarns crossing each other at right angles to form the grain. Weaving is made by threads strung vertically (warp) then interlaced horizontally with another thread (weft) to form a woven fabric. Knitting is a single yarn, looped continuously to produce a braided look, usually done on knitting needles.
I made straps on an inkle loom. I’m making them into suspenders or braces for 5 male friends that do reenactments.”

“The main types of looms are:
Back strap looms--this is a simple loom with string handles that part of the loom is the weaver. It’s an ancient loom type and is very transportable.
Inkle looms, which are for straps or belts and have 2 string heddles.
Rigid heddle looms, which are wider but still have 2 rigid heddles. They have a hole or a slot. They're great for simple weave patterns or you can hand manipulate into other patterns.
Table top looms, which can have multiple harnesses but are usually smaller in size and are great for smaller projects, classes, or samples
Floor looms, which have multiple harness, usually have foot control levers or are computer controlled and are great most projects but are usually to heavy to take places.
I've made a scarf on a rigid heddle, hat band on an inkle loom, and a summer and winter patterned scarf.
I've brought the inkle loom to fiber festivals and taught how to use it.”

“I made an infinity scarf using recycled silk sari fabric. I have made a backstrap loom and have woven the strap for a backstrap loom for a friend and showed her how to weave using it.
The infinity scarf was kind of stiff for a scarf. I enjoyed using the backstop loom and it was kind of fun when a group of us were using it in the park. We attracted a lot of people to see what we were doing.”

“I earned my badge by getting together with a fellow farmgirl and her husband. He took us to the family fishing spot that is on my friend's homestead. He was very patient, and because we were on private land, we did not need a license. We learned and did all of the knots and after putting plastic gloves on we hooked live worms. We also learned about sinkers and bobbers and tried them to see if we had different results. It was not pretty, but to our surprise we caught fish and got them off the hook by ourselves giggling and jumping the whole time. We caught sunnies and trout. We did release them.”

“After our initial weaving class I fell in love and joined a weekly class/get together at the basketry shop. My next basket was a mellon basket with a gods eye on the handles. My teacher is Native American and spends hours talking about the different styles from the different tribes. The Lenape Indians were in our area so we have alot of history. I spend 4 hours each week with these wonderful people and hope to start selling some of my work soon. I even made a pine needle basket.
It turned out perfect I have new friends and great christmas presents to give out.”

“I live in California, so reusable bags are mandatory unless you want to pay 10 cents per bag for paper or plastic. I have a load of bags in my truck and a load in my husbands car, so no matter which auto I take to the market, I have my bags with me. It did take a while to remember taking bags into every store every time I shopped. However, I am happy to do it because of the large amounts of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans and our food supply.”

“My sister, Cindy, and I live in California. A few years ago, we took an Ancestry DNA test for fun and found we have a 1/2 Sister who lives in Texas. We have been reunited and do yearly get togethers. This year we went back to Texas because Kristin wanted to see where we grew up before moving to California. So we did a little nostalgia tour to show her our old house, school, playground, place where our parents worked, etc. We found a sign on the town square with a little misspelled word, so we took photos and made a video of us singing "we are Fanily" lots of laughs.
We had an awesome adventure. However, going back to your old town can also be very disappointing and heartbreaking when you find all your old places have been torn down and replaced. It can make you feel like your own history has been erased from the face of the earth.”

“Now at 74 years old, I have begun to make a bucket list. Years and years ago, I did a little crocheting, but now wanted to make some hat and scarf sets for the elementary school I volunteer at once a week. So I looked up an easy pattern on the internet and practiced by watching YouTube to learn casting on and double crochet stitches.
After practicing and practicing the double crochet and chain stitches, I began making the project. I must admit I had to tear it out and start over four times. A friend finally helped me over my mistakes and my old hands finally got the message. I have attached a photo and am very pleased at the final outcome. Some child will be warm this winter.”

“I cut out and painted wood-shaped ornaments of trucks, snowmen, and angels. I also stitched felt shapes of stockings, trees, and mittens for my tree. I think it turned out well. It took some time as I am learning to use the saw and sander.
For gifts, I made all the ladies on my Christmas list a shaped door hanger and an ornament.
These turned out great. I really enjoyed making them.”
