Hi, everyone
I'm so happy to now be a part of the Farmgirl Sisterhood chat! I also enrolled today to become an official FarmGirl, too. (I don't have my number yet, but that's coming.)
A little about me: I grew up in Rhode Island in the suburbs, not on a farm, but I always loved going to the fair and visiting the dairy farm my father's cousin had. My Italian mother always had a small garden, and her father was a florist. (I think I get my green thumb from Grandpa!) After college graduation, I moved to Virginia - below the Mason-Dixon line. What an adjustment! Apartment living wasn't conducive to having a garden, but I did live in a house for a couple years, and had one large garden then.
19 years ago, I moved to the Charleston, SC area. I finally bought my first house 3 years ago - with the intent to start a suburban homestead. My house sits on 1/3 acre of land in a neighborhood that allows gardening and small farm animals. I have planted 6 fruit trees (apples, elderberries, key limes) and 3 grape vines, and I currently have 21 raised beds. Two of my beds contain my raspberry patch and my asparagus. The others get planted with various heirloom vegetables and fruits three seasons of the year. (I love the long growing season here but hate the diseases and pests that come with the heat and humidity!!)
I've learned so much about gardening/growing down South (which is TOTALLY different than up north!), and I have so much more to learn. That's one reason I'm happy I found you guys (see? - still a Yankee).
I work full time (less than 9 years to retirement, at most) and work hard to keep up with my large garden/urban farm. My goal is to also raise chickens for eggs, have my own water-catching system, and plant several more fruit & nut trees (almonds, olives, figs, maybe kiwis). I'm also a writer (can you tell? LOL) and have a website where I share what's happening on my little plot of heaven.
Last year, I taught myself how to can/preserve some of my produce (in addition to dehydrating and freezing things). I dared to enter 4 things in the county fair last October and won 5 ribbons! I'm so proud of myself. I'm getting more and more "country" every day!
I'm not currently married, but I have a long-term beau (ring to come one day??) who is very helpful to me on my homestead. I also have a 23-year-old son who is currently staying with me. He's not exactly the farming type, but I love him anyway. :)
I hope to find a local sisterhood chapter I can join, and I look forward to "meeting" all of you through this wonderful vehicle called the internet! Maybe one day, even in person.

Hi Rosemarie :) Welcome to the forums! I would LOVE to pick your brain about gardening down here in the south, especially when and what to plant for the "Fall" season, as I declare we do not have one!!! I am originally from MD and have been down here since 2004, and am still clueless! Canning, dehydrating, and such are true passions of mine! We go to pick your own farms for strawberries, blueberries, peaches and apples each year! Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi, Shannon! Looks like you live just down the road from me...as I'm in Ladson. How cool is that? As for gardening, I have a website (link below) with all my good, bad, and ugly. There's a tab for this area's planting calendar, too. Feel free to browse & ask questions.

ooops... I misread about your moving to your new house. At first I thought it was 3 months. I went back to read it after my post and realized you've been there 3 years! my bad.

Welcome Rosemarie to the MJF Connection! It looks like you have been one busy gardener these past few years too. One big plus about the south is that we have longer growing seasons. I look forward to hearing about your projects here on "The Farm"!

Thanks, Winnie. Today I'm off work and getting ready to prep the fallow beds for fall planting this weekend. I'm a little behind because the heat has been so brutal, nothing would've germinated if I had planted according to the calendar. I hope all can mature before frost now. Aah...the life of a gardener/farmer.

Rosemarie - I wasn't subscribed to the Welcome Wagon when you joined but I'd like to give you a great big Texas welcome right now.
I admit, I didn't just stumble across your post here...I hunted you down!  Because I wanted to thank you and apologize. You left a wonderful comment on my blog on March 31 and I only found it today after discovering a little problem - all the comments were quietly being filed away as spam!
