One of my most Favorite Critters, next to Dogs of course:-)
I hope I can help y’all understand a bit about the Crows and why they are Misunderstood.
I appreciate them for their Family Values and I appreciate all they stand for. And so much more that I will be sharing:-)

As always I want to have a fun Give Away for my new Critter of the Month.
All you need to do is tell me why you may or may not like Crows. Or simply say hi if you do not want to join the giveaway. Even if you have already won one of my giveaways I will still put your name in my Mama Hen Hat. No one ever knows who’s name will be drawn.

Now here a little bit of History of these amazing Birds. Enjoy.

~~~~CROWS~~~~
Crows are intelligent, large, black songbirds of the genus Corvus known for their adaptability, complex social behaviors, and ability to use tools. They are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food sources, and are found in diverse habitats across North America and other parts of the world. Crows are easily recognizable by their glossy black feathers, loud caws, and distinctive waddling walk.
Key Characteristics
Appearance:
Crows are large, all-black birds with glossy feathers that can appear iridescent in certain light. They have long legs, a thick neck, and a heavy, straight bill.
Intelligence:
They are considered among the most intelligent birds, capable of complex problem-solving, tool use, and forming long-lasting memories.
Vocalization:
Crows have a complex vocal organ (syrinx) that allows them to produce a variety of sounds, including their characteristic loud "caw".
Diet:
As omnivores, crows eat almost anything, including insects, seeds, fruits, carrion, and even eggs and chicks from other nests.
Habitat:
They are highly adaptable and can be found in urban areas, forests, fields, and coastal regions.
Behavior and Social Life
Social Structure:
Crows often live in large family groups and are known to gather in large roosts.
Adaptability:
Their intelligence and adaptability have allowed them to thrive in human-modified environments, such as cities and suburbs.
Tool Use:
Crows have been observed using tools, such as dropping nuts onto roads to be cracked by cars.
Distinguishing from Ravens
Size: Crows are smaller than ravens.
Tail: Crows have a short, squared-off tail, while ravens have a longer, wedge-shaped tail.
Sound: Crows make a higher-pitched "caw," whereas ravens produce a deeper croak.
Big Hugs,
Debbie
Oh Debbie, you know I share your love of crows! To me they are friendly and I just love hearing their calls. I feed them peanuts and they always remember to come back. They seem to always usher in my favorite time of year. I see them more and more often during that time. Thanks for sharing the info on them!
Have they left you any trinkets Denise?
My Crows in Colorado left little trinkets. But, here I just cannot get them to come to me to eat the peanuts and the cheese puffs like I gave my crows in Colorado. Sadly our Stellar Jays get it all. Tom gets a couple in the front and he gets so many crow feathers for me.
I LOVE crows!! :) We feed them peanuts and occasionally meat that is not suitable for human consumption!! :) We have a family that returns every year to nest nearby. They always bring their babies to eat the peanuts, too. We can have up to 25 crows in the fall time show up to partake of the peanuts at feeding times!!They are super fun to watch. I have have a few crow decor items that I keep up year round!! :)
So very interesting Debbie, thank you for sharing. I don’t know that much about crows, and never have seen more than a few at a time. When I met Bentley he taught me this rhyme, although he only knew #1-6. As we would be riding in the car and encounter a couple in the road, he would say “two for joy”. I had never heard that before, so he recited 1-6. Now as I was looking it up to share, I find there are many different versions.
This is fascinating! You all have persuaded me to start putting out peanuts.
Counting Crows, the band, makes a whole lot more sense now, thanks to Wanda Sue. They have seven in their "murder," so I bet there are a bunch of untold secrets there.
I still struggle with differentiating ravens from crows when they aren't vocal, but someone (Randy Weisser) managed to photograph both side by side.
The bill and the tale are really the only way to tell them apart other than their calls. The crow caws the ravens call sound like "gronk". Crows can be the same size.
Great photo Chris!
You know how your mind sometimes "reads" words wrong? Imagine my surprise when I clicked on this topic and saw a bird picture when my mind read "cows"! Ugh! It's been a bit crazy around here lately LOL! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :) I'm not sure if we have any crows around here or not. Do they show up only in the fall or all year? I'm wondering if they're the big group of birds that are super noisy and land in the fields after harvest.
