I just had to share this with all of you. I have a large very heavy cast iron cauldron for my Halloween display on my porch. I ask my nephew to move it up on the porch just a few feet away. When he flipped it over it was full of black spiders, ones I have never seen before. Here is a photo and a description. Beware!
A fake widow spider, also known as a false widow, is a spider from the genus Steatoda that is often mistaken for a true black widow spider. The main difference is that false widows lack the red hourglass marking on the underside of their abdomen, though they may have other cream or lighter-colored markings on top. They have a rounded, bulbous abdomen and are generally smaller than true widows. Key features Body: Shiny and globular, with a body color of dark brown to purplish-brown. Abdomen markings: Often has cream, grayish, or light-colored markings on the abdomen, but not the bright red hourglass found on a true black widow. The noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis) is known for markings that resemble a skull. Size: Generally smaller than true widow spiders, with females ranging from about 6.5 to 14 mm in body length and males being smaller. Legs: Tend to have shorter legs relative to their body size compared to true widows. Venom and danger While false widows have a venomous bite, their venom is not considered potent and is less harmful than that of a true black widow. A bite typically results in symptoms similar to a wasp sting, such as pain at the bite site that lasts for several hours. Males are more likely to bite, but it usually happens only when they feel threatened.

The dachshund is my favorite too. That cauldron looks like a legitimate workout to move even when not covered with false widows! |
