I have read half way through the book, I did that on the train, what a neat book!
I have learned a lot so far and the fact that I will never raise bees but it sure is a great book and I want to try and make that bread!

Thanks Carole.

Welcome back Darlene! Can we now proceed with our book reading? How do we want to go about this? Do we want to read it through by a certain date and discuss? Feedback always welcome!

I've started reading the book. It is a pretty quick, and honestly entertaining, read. With as much information in it, do we want to read the whole thing and then discuss, or should we read it in sections and then discuss each section? For example read x amount of chapters by date y and then discuss those chapters, while reading the next amount of chapters by the next date. I am fine with doing the whole book at once - I have just found the book stock-full of info!

Shannon, indeed it is entertaining and informative. Why don't we read the whole book and start our discussion.

I will look at our local library first or order it if they do not have it. Books, reading, all wonderful, and discussing them with other women, especially farmgirls, quilters, etc., will be very enjoyable. My book discussion group in our area meets at our local library, but we read other types of books, fiction and non-fiction. It still is a wonderful and interesting thing to get together with them once a month.I so look forward to doing the same with this group.

Hello everyone,

How are we all doing on the book?

Here are my thoughts ... the book is a combination of personal experience mixed with some "how to" of running a small farm. It is written in a casual tone, which makes it as though you are having a conversation with the author.

I enjoyed her chapter on "old Stuff". I certainly could relate. I'm always on the lookout for old kitchen items. I have quite a collection of cast iron pans started. I so enjoy cooking on them, much better than my modern pans.

Her experience/ownership of sled dogs is what I found the most amusing. I had never considered this to be a city gal turned homestead sort of thing. It sounded like loads of fun.

I was sadden by the death of her angora rabbit. The idea of understanding "the full weight of responsibility that keeping livestock entails ... it's not all fluffy scarves and omelets" (121) I think for me it was something I knew but hadn't given it much thought. I will agree that one needs to learn to take responsibility for your live stock and that may include having to euthanize some, not to mention slaughter for consumption. The author is a vegetarian, so the slaughtering is not an issue for her. Perhaps Julie can chine in on that point given that they raise beef cattle.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It is a great book to read for someone wanting to start out as a farmgal. Lots of great advice and reference to check out.

That's my take on it. Anyone else wants to chine in?

i was saddened by the death of her chicks. That was sad but that chapter made me more interested in Chickens although I can't have them here.No room.
I loved the chapter on old stuff, It was pretty neat and right down my alley.

I really enjoyed the book and will probably read it again.

Thanks Carole.

I still have not finished the book :( I am trying desperately hard to get motivated to read again... I have a stack of books that I want/need to read. I think there may be some depression setting in right now, though I am thankfully keeping busy... I have just lost so much interest in the things that I generally love!

Take care Shannon, you have a whole lot on your plate, your in my prayers for your move and all else that is going on and also that the lady next door will leave you all alone and she might get something she doesn't want with the new neighbors, only worse than chickens.

Blessings

Thank you Darlene for your input.

Shannon, I am sorry to read about your situation. I do hope that things will settle for you soon.

Is anyone interested in reading another book? Would you rather put the book club on hold?

Darlene, do you have a book in mind? Do let me know.

I did write up a post with a few suggestions, copied and pasted a brief extract from the book (from Amazon). You might want to check it out!
