Yep, I constantly work of something or another. After finishing my recent vest, I started making some fun boot cuffs that just add a bit of extra warmth to your legs and a pop of color. I am making them for friends that I will be visiting in October. I used to only want to knit when it was cooler weather but now I have so many things I want to try and make that I have to knit year round! Go ahead, Carole and grab those knitting needles! It is always fun to watch something become reality from a skein of pretty yarn!!

I just finished Christmas presents for both my brother and sister-in-law. I'm challenging myself to knit most of my Christmas this year. We'll see how well I meet the challenge. I'm taking a little break to do a dish cloth for a swap, then I'm starting a hoodie sweater for my brother's dog. I know, that sounds a little nuts, but she's a city dog, she needs that kind of wardrobe hee hee! I work on my little garter stitch scarves for the elders when I'm watching Lily. Knitting has become a real love for me!

Winnie, the thought came to mind that Florida is much to warm to knit, then I remembered how low they keep their a/c thermostats! lol Brrrrr .... freezing when you walk into a restaurant! lol

Amy, good for your to make your Christmas presents. Ya know, there is a home made badge that you may be able to earn as you knit your gifts. I can look it up for you when I get home (my badge binder is home).

Denise, let us know when you do pick up those knitting needles. I hear that u tube has lots of videos on knitting socks. Do you have a yarn shop close to your home? If so, perhaps they would have classes. I so enjoy classes!

Okay - I said in June my goal was to make at least one knitted gift for Christmas. What is easy to start with when learning to knit???

Shannon, a scarf! You can use thick wool and it is absolutely gorgeous. You can knit a straight one or a circular one. Let me get back to you. I have access to a free pattern that you might like. It was Pumpkin's first knitted item (I thought her). (Had to look back in the badge awardee from MJF for a picture)

Great idea Carole! Shannon, you can also use the same kind of thick artisan yarn and just make a long scarf that wraps around. There are so many lovely yarns available that are thick ( use large needles) and luscious. Using thick yarn allows you to use larger needles that are easier for first time knitting.

I'm excited for you Shannon! My mom taught me to knit just like Carole taught her daughter. I didn't do much until recently, but I'm so glad I learned. I've started knitting a lot, and now I love it. It's kind of meditative in a way, even when I'm facing a new challenge with a pattern, I find it relaxing. Enjoy making your scarf! Carole and Winnie are terrific knitting mentors!

Sadly, Pumpkin cannot find the pattern. I'm getting her to clean her room before she heads to college. Wish me luck! lol

Those are awesome scarves. My daughter made me one in crochet and I have to say it is my favorite one.

It is okay Carole. I will try to find something! I know how to arm and finger knit, so hopefully I'll pick up knitting with needles fairly easy!

Shannon, did you look on Ravelry.com? They have a lot of ideas. Also the Lion Brand Yarn website is really nice.

I decided to start my mom's Christmas present instead of the doggie sweater, since I don't know the doggie's size. I'm making mom a yoga wrap, basically a wrap that buttons around the wrist to keep her shoulders and arms warm. It's pretty much a rectangle, so I figured it was a good pattern to learn some more advanced techniques. Boy Howdy, I had no idea what I was getting into! It has knit and pearl through back loops, add stitches then turn and the turn back again, all kinds of twists and turns! I started it and ripped it out no less than 8 times before I figured everything out. What a lesson in technique, learning to practice before starting unfamiliar things and patience, patience patience!

Shannon, Pumpkin found the pattern. Here is the link: http://spiderwomanknits.typepad.com/files/drop-stitch-cowl-2013-1.pdf

If you want to check out her blog: http://spiderwomanknits.typepad.com

And yes, do check out http://www.ravelry.com

Gosh, all this knitting talk is making me want to pick up my needles! It is so humid today. You sweat just breathing.

I just found this post and it's timely for me...I tried to knit a blanket for Shannon's little one and ripped it apart so many times! But at my new job there is an experienced knitter who belongs to a local knitting group and asked me to join. I'm looking forward to improving this skill. If I make anything good I'll post...

That's great, Lexi! I can really relate to your ripping out story! I'd love to find a knitting group nearby. There's one that meets at the library on Saturday afternoon that I could join when I find someone to stay with mom.

Good luck, Lexi! I predict that going to a knitting group will help you immensely with your skills and pretty soon you will be knitting away more than ripping out!LOL!!

Oh I just saw all of these updates!!! Carole - please thank Pumpkin for the website/pattern! I will definitely be checking that out. I am on major restrictions for awhile, so it is a good time for me to start learning :) I will also hopefully be doing some crafts for the various upcoming swaps. I love this time of the year :)

Lexi - Oh how exciting to be going to a knitting group! Once I learn how to knit, I want to start making fishermen's caps that are sent to those who fish in the winter, around Christmas time. I figured even if I cannot do it this year, hopefully I can next year! My 8 yo really wants to learn as well!

Shannon that is a great goal. I used to work with outpatients who have cancer and always wanted to be able to make hats for them. It is what I hope to do.
