I was wondering what everyone's favorite book was from their childhood? Mine was "Charlette's Web." I remember so clearly that it was the first book that made me cry, and I thought I was weird because I did! What was your fav?

I loved that book too, but my favorite was Wind in the Willows. I loved ratty and mole and their adventures at Toad Hollow.

Amy, what a great question! Sadly, I do not recall my mother ever reading to me, nor being encouraged to read. We were continuously playing outside and when school started, we had lots of homework to do and not much time to read for pleasure. I was educated from 1-5 in French and from 6th grade to my graduate degree in English.

What I cherished the most is reading with my daughter. Goodness, we (I read to her during bed time even when she knew how to read) read a lot of books. The magic tree house was her favourite and I enjoyed them too. We started that series when she was 2 years old and have read every single book. I enjoyed looking for books to read to her, probably because I did not have that experience as a child.

I have read numerous children's books and still do. My favourite is My Penguin Osbert by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. It is about a little boy who asks Santa (for the record I'm Santa's biggest fan) for a penguins and get ones. He learns to make sacrifices in order to properly take care of his penguin. Wonderful books for toddlers. Pumpkin (my DD) reads it to me now at Christmas time! It has become an annual ritual!

My all time favourite would be the Harry Potter Series (read them in my late 30's). My DD started reading them in 3rd grade. We've had some great philosophical conversations about the series.

This is probably a longer answer than you expected, but it really made me think. I lived my childhood reading via my daughter. Well, you know what they say "you're never to old to relive your childhood"! lol

I remember liking Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys but my favorite one when My youngest was little, and it is still is hers is called "Where's Goldie". It is so cute.

Wow, this is so interesting, and it gives me some new titles to put on my reading list.

Bonnie, I never read Wind in the Willows, and I'm not sure why. But I have a copy and I'm going to read it now!

Carole, I'm going to get the penguin book for my granddaughter. Harry Potter has been on my list for a long time. Can you believe I've never read any of the books or seen any of the movies!

Darlene, I LOVED Nancy Drew! I wanted to be like her (although I wasn't brave enough). I'm going to get Where's Goldie for my granddaughter too.

Happy Day!

I am a "nerd" and book worm, so I could give you many, lol. The first book I remember loving was "Corduroy" and I still read it to my little ones now! After that, it was probably "island of the Blue Dolphins". My favorite book starting in about eighth grade was "Moby Dick". I also remember thoroughly enjoying the LittleHouse on the Prairie books! I did a full unit study with my oldest for that one... I think I might do it again with all my kiddos... Maybe in another year or so.

This is a very interesting question. I didn't read a lot as a child, to be honest. I went through a phase in about 7th-8th grade with Christopher Pike books, but I wouldn't call that anything special. I read aloud to my family a lot. We read through the Little House books a few years ago and they are definitely UP there! :)

I felt the same way about Nancy Drew it took me into a whole other world.

I still read those now once in a while, No surprises and intrigue.
I was looking through my stuff for the book my daughter had but so far nothing then I thought about Amazon and Ebay but they wanted $40. for it, I am still looking :D

Shannon Corduroy is a cute book.

Alicia, that is nice that your family enjoys to listen while your reading.

Shannon and Alicia, my daughter loved the Little House books so much I had to make her a "Mrs. Ingalls" costume for Halloween one year. She has severe ADD, and reading was always extremely difficult for her, so we always read out loud together. Another series we both loved is Anne of Green Gables. Anyone else like those?

My oldest loves Anne of Green Gables as well, and we also enjoy Elsie Dinsmore series. As far as newer boos that were not out when I was younger, the Moody series by Sarah Maxwell is definitely a favorite for ALL my kids!

Shannon, yes we are. I just checked with Amazon. The books/series we read was by Megan McDonald!

BTW, Great series! I'm sure you can get it from your local library!

I love this question! My all time favorite books were the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Growing up so far out in the country, we rarely got to town to the public library. But the Book mobile would come to a stop 5 miles from us and we were allowed to check out as many books as we could read in a month. I loved book mobile day,. For those of you who have never heard of a book mobile, think large school bus, with the seats removed and shelves from top to bottom all the way around the sides. Sectioned off for different levels of reading and they are always happy to bring out your special orders from the public county library. Now I take the grands to the book mobile and they love it just as much as I do.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

Thank goodness for the book mobile! I am fortunate enough I can get to the library (or 3-4 different ones), but the bookmobile keeps lots of kiddos reading in the summer!

Julie, what a great story! We didn't have a book mobile in Montreal. Although there were many libraries around (if you took the transit), my mom never took us to a library! Hum.... I'll have to ask her about it.

Our library was walking distance from our house when I was a child. My older brother and I went all the time. But we had friends who lived further out who had the book mobile visit their area. I went with t them once and thought it was the coolest thing.

When I was little I would say my favorite was Zippy the Chimpanzee. I was an avid reader in school. My father loved and still loves to read as do I. I love my books and have many. Lots of children's books for the grands to read and my husband and I have large collections. I really want a room to make into a library. I have lots of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. They are all older versions which is a preference for us. We frequent antique stores for books.

Denise, I've never heard of Zippy the Chimpanzee, but I love the title! I have lots of children's books here for my granddaughter as well, including part of our old set of Childcraft volumes. Did anyone else have them? I don't have them all of them, but I have the ones with nursery rhymes, poetry, fairy tales and some others. I spent hours reading them as a child. I also love buying old books. Once a year our local AAUW has a huge used book sale and I've gotten lots of treasures there.

This is a great question...hard to answer with only a few choices since I was and still am a bookworm! I loved the Nancy Drew stories. I also loved Robert Heinlein. My first was "Have Spacesuit, will travel." I also loved the Chronicles of Narnia. There was an old one called, I think, "the Boy who got Mailed" that I read many times. Pretty much anything I really liked I kept and read over and over, maybe because I was an only child ;)
