If any of my lovely sisters are interested, here are some photos from the Burns Supper as well as links to YouTube video of me dancing with my group tonight.

Hannah thanks for sharing, that looks like so much fun. When going to the annual Scottish games, we love to watch the dancing demonstrations. At a folk music festival we used to attend, they had “contra” dancing, which was similar. That was very exciting because the whole gym floor was filled with rows of couples dancing. Have you heard of that type? |

Oh! Do you go to the big gathering at Grandfather Mountain??? I've never been, but I want to go sometime. My family on my dad's side up until they came North in the early 1900's was from Mount Airy. I have an Aunt and Uncle in Kinston and my cousin and her family are in Raleigh. So we go to North Carolina now and then, but it's never lined up with the Highland games.
Now Contra dancing is something I would love to try. It's super big up in New England, which is where my mother's family is from. We dance Scottish Country Dance, which is similar in some respects, but at the same time vastly different. I believe both Contra and Square Dance both have their roots in English, Scottish, and Irish Country dance and borrow aspects of all three. I have danced some very basic contra dances at historical reenactments and the annual fiddlers gathering, but nothing like what you have described. I've watched some of the big dances on YouTube though! |

We have been to the GMHG’s several times. It is something to see! You really need to make it a priority to attend in the future. The high point, and actually when things really take off, is the massed bands at noon on Saturday. Oh my goodness, it will send chills through your Scottish soul, lol. After that, there is so much happening. Clan tents surround the football sized field, as well as vendors, Scottish style music groups, dancing, drum circles, the athletic games, and of course food. There is also a smaller version of the games in April north of Charlotte, at Lake Norman. It’s called the Loch Norman Highland Games. It is also a lot of fun, just not as big. They also have a separate field where they have a reenactment village set up. It will be April 15-16 this year, maybe that would work into your calendar. My husband played the pipes with The Oasis Highlanders at one time. It is a Shrine unit, and they would March in local parades to raise money for the Shriners hospital for burned and crippled children. He has since retired from that, but will pick up his pipes now and then to learn a new tune. He is currently working on The Skye Boat song for me, since I am an Outlander fan, lol. I hope you get to make it to one of the games this year. |

Oh my stars, how marvelous to read about your dancing and scottish roots. I am just plain ole' Irish through and through but am a raving Outlander fan. I just discovered this series last year and read all nine books non-stop as well as buying the TV series. It was awesome to learn so much about the Scots who settled in North Carolina as well as their strong influence on the American Revolution. My BFF Barbie, lives in South Carolina and her DH is a big Outlander fan too. I must tell them about the Highland Games in April. I'm sure they will want to attend as long as proving one's heritage is not a requirement for attendance -- He's Irish and she is Polish. LOL. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. hugs, jean . . . . "say could that lass be I?"

No requirements Jean but to enjoy and have fun! The clan tents are a great source to find out if your family name has Scottish connections. |

My first husband was a Buchanan -- Scot through and through complete with black and yellow tartan. He's long gone to the great Highland Games in the Skye . . .

Jean, if your friends live anywhere close to Charleston, I believe they have some kind of games/festival/gathering in North Charleston. I don't know how big it is or much about it, I just remember seeing it listed when we were planning our vacation last Fall. We were going to check it out, but ended up canceling the whole vacation because the new pup couldn't be left.
Wanda, that all sounds like a ton of fun. I will definitely keep both gatherings in mind for when we can start traveling again. Currently our puppy has curtailed that a bit. |

Hannah, I love your photos and dancing, how fun! I would absolutely love to learn that dance. I do have my heart set on tap and jig as well one day. I found out about 3 years ago that I'm half English and half Scottish via an Ancestry DNA test... both my maternal and paternal grandfathers were adopted, so we never truly knew what our ancestry was. My mother is mostly English, and my father was mostly Scottish. I've enjoyed learning about that Scottish culture and heritage. I'm still digging into family history, but have hit a wall because of private adoption records and my grandfather was born nearly 100 years ago now. I may never know. But our DNA results have helped me identify at least where I came from! |

AGREED Hannah! You and your hubs ARE a beautiful pair!! I loved seeing and reading about the dances and festivals from the posts but I genuinely loved the video of you dancing with the group and the music!! Awesome for you to share!! I too did the DNA testing and over 40 % was from Wales and Ireland and a little over half from Europe in general. Not so precise, but.. kinda fun to know. |

I'm glad you ladies enjoyed the pictures!
I would love to do one of those DNA tests. I know from family records that I am mostly English with a fair amount of Irish, Scottish, and German/French (Alsace-Lorraine region, so could go either way) thrown in. But the wild card is my grandmother who was adopted at birth. She looked VERY British Isle-y, like straight out of a BBC program, and family rumors claim Welsh, but no real way to know without DNA. |
