I have found such joy in simple things;
A plain, clean room, a nut-brown loaf of bread,
A cup of milk, a kettle as it sings,
The shelter of a roof above my head,
And in a leaf-laced square along the floor,
Where yellow sunlight glimmers through a door.

I have found such joy in things that fill
My quiet days: a curtain's blowing grace,
A potted plant upon my window sill,
A rose, fresh-cut and placed within a vase;
A table cleared, a lamp beside a chair,
And books I long have loved beside me there.

Oh, I have found such joys I wish I might
Tell every woman who goes seeking far
For some elusive, feverish delight,
That very close to home the great joys are:
The elemental things - old as the race,
Yet never, through the ages, commonplace.
-Grace Noll Crowell

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.

And sweetest in the Gale is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest Sea,
Yet never in Extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Perfect thought to always keep in mind!! Fall is an easy season to enjoy the outdoor changes after a long hot summer. It is hard not to be looking forward to cozy fireplaces where one can gather warmth while reading or doing some handwork.

Yes we are! I almost dislike November because to me October screams fall. Though the temps in November seem to call for bonfires, hot chocolate and other fall activities. So I guess they are both well situated after all. Lol

I love fall, too.

We are glad to be back from Spain, but we still have not gotten back our Jetlag time of 7 to 8 hours. Keep waking up at 2, 3, 4, and unable to be back to sleep.

For me, what I miss about Fall is FALL!! Down here in Florida we are robbed of the splendor of changing foliage, the weather swinging to cooler days and nights, and embracing of all things harvest to enjoy. Here in Florida, we can only import the apples, pumpkins, gourds, and other elements that come from northern states. While imports save the day, they do not replace the fall feelings of these things being right on the farms in your areas. There is something special about local farm stands where you purchase produce fresh from the orchards and fields. Yes, we have strawberries and water melons in abundance in Spring, but we have nothing of sentiment for Fall simply because those items don't grown down here.

I understand, Winnie. In Texas, we don’t get the changing of colors that we did up in Illinois, and I really miss that. We do have some local farm stands here because a lot of things are grown in Texas.

We don't really get many changing colors for fall either until later fall and then it's mostly brown. My pecans usually fall the week after Thanksgiving so no pecan pies that night.

I remember so well,
The smells from that oven,
From my momma’s cookies,
That she’d bake by the dozen.

Or the wondrous scent,
Of her homemade bread,
And those oven-baked beans,
We were gratefully fed.

That old kitchen stove,
I remember so well,
Every meal that was cooked,
All the tastes and the smell.

The heat in the kitchen,
On a Thanksgiving day,
None of these memories,
Will yet fade away.

Yes, that old kitchen stove.
Though gone now, forever,
It is a part of my life,
That I’ll always treasure.

My Grandmother had a very similar stove at their home on a farm in Indiana. I remember her getting the temps just right to bake her biscuits and cherry pies in the summers. They were a lot of work, however, especially in the winter months when it is snowing and cold.

Winnie, I bet her house smelled amazing. Did they use the stove to heat the house also?

Love the smell of fresh baked Check kolache like my Paternal grandmother made. And my maternal grandmother made the best cookies and pies.

I have always baked and cooked since I was 7 years old. So it has been way over 67 years. Linda I have an awesome recipe for Check kolache from an old family recipe from a check friend. The house smelled fantastic the other day when I baked.
