This may be a tad late to start, but I would like to show you how to make a Christmas sweatshirt. I am hoping there are a few in the henhouse who would be interested in making one along with me to help celebrate the holidays.

In spite of how the tree looks, there is no crochet involved. The tree is made from a round store-bought doily. I have always used a sewing machine for the first step; however, the sewing can be done entirely by hand. You can be very creative and make this your own.

Here is a picture of my sweatshirt; it is around 15-20 years old, and whenever I wear it I get many comments. It is completely machine washable and dryable.

I have made these for family and friends and everyone loves them. It would also make a great project for a young girl to make.

The supplies you will need (with examples) are:
* A red sweatshirt (or green or blue)
* A 12" white store-bought doily - examples below.

The first was from Dollar General and the other from an estate sale. I have also bought them at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and JoAnns.
* Miscellaneous smaller Christmas-shaped colorful buttons.

You can see in my sweatshirt that I also found package-shaped buttons that I put at the base of the tree.

If anyone is interested in this project, I will start the instructions for making the tree from the doily and then continue from there. I will give you a little time between "lessons".

Are you ready to start? Let's have fun!

I don't have doilies I want to use but I do have yards and yards of lace. Would this work?

The doily makes the tree (without cutting); however, I am sure you could make a layered tree with your lace, depending on how wide it is. This is mainly a lacy tree with whatever buttons or trims you want to decorate with. I have had the small metallic beaded trims on mine like a garland. After 15+ years of washing every holiday season the beads really need replacing. LOL! Guess I need to do some redecorating.

Glad to have you join in -
So far it is me, Karen and Judith.
Just need the sweatshirt, round doily of 12-16" (of lace of 2+ inches wide), and lots of Christmas or cute shaped buttons>

Judith - I know you plan to make your tree out of lace you have on hand. You may want to make the tree and sew the layers together and then position on the sweatshirt.
Karen - If you have your doily, making the tree out of the doily is the hardest part of making this sweatshirt.

And I know - the directions below will be Clear as MUD! But they will make sense, I hope, as you go on.

The trees all depend on the doily you have and how you "design" it with the doily.
Positioning the doily:
1. Place the doily on the sweatshirt, centered with the top where you want the top of the tree. Sometimes you need to put the sweatshirt on and decide where you want the tree to be while looking in a mirror. NOTE: If you want to put a star or angel on top of the tree, leave a little room for that, too.
2. Decide which edge of the doily will be the tip of the tree and pin it to the sweatshirt. Take the sweatshirt off.
3. Now put a pin in the center bottom of the doily, directly under the pinned top.

Designing the tree (each doily will be different):
1. You will not be cutting the doily.
2. Tuck under the rounded sides of the tree, deciding what size the bottom of the tree will be. I sometimes adjust the bottom edge several times when I see how the "branches" will sit.
3. You can leave the sides straight by tucking under the entire rounded edge of the doily. Or you can tuck in the rounded edge but leave the rounded edges out to give a different shape to the tree.

Here are some shapes I made - the first 2 from the same doily and the 3rd from a different doily; you can see the different widths of the bottom of the tree. This is all up to you.

4. When you get your tree the way you want it, pin it down all around the sides, leaving the bottom loose.
5. Sew the tree down by machine or by hand. When using a machine, I stitch up the straight sides first. You can also stitch the curves down now, or I fasten them down by hand when adding the button "ornaments."

6. Now you can add the trunk/stand for the tree with a scrap of brown or red fabric. Place it slightly under the loose bottom edge of the tree and stitch it down.

Now comes the fun!
Decorate your tree with button ornaments, and maybe some Christmas lights buttons, or a ready-made tiny light garland in the mini tree ornament area of the store by sewing and gluing (yes, I do both, since I wash this in the machine at least a couple times every year). Some of the "ornaments" had no buttoon holes and I just glued them on with a permanent glue. The sweatshirt shown at the top is over 20 years old and has been washed many times.
You can also add garlands with thin ribbons, smaller laces, and small bead or pearl "ropes". You can see that I used the small beaded garlands and now, after 20+ years, I need to change them. The silver paint has come off after all the washings.
I just noticed today at JoAnns that they have some buttons that look like packages. I have a few of those under my tree.

Okay! WHEW! Any questions, you can call me or PM me. Have fun!

I’ve tried this three times to post, and it hasn’t posted. Let me try again.

I am joining you on this. I put my white doily tree with straight sides on a navy blue sweatshirt. Then I laid out the “ornaments“. And I’m glad I took a picture of them because my husband had to iron something and moved my sweatshirt from the ironing board and none of the ornaments are in the correct places. Lol! Here are my pictures of what the buttons were supposed to look like and now I have to put them on.

Unfortunately, due to a major disruption this month, I will be unable to make it this year but I love it so I'm hoping I can do it next year.
