Heffalump
noun: (chiefly childish, humorous) (A child's name for) an elephant. Something that is elusive

Coined by A.A. Milne in the Winnie-the-Pooh book series.
Extra credit: A "heffalump trap" figuratively refers to a trap set for an opponent that ends up trapping the person who set it.

"And then, of course, there is The Economy. That heffalump is perhaps the most oft-cited reason for why we need to keep 'creating jobs', working them, and shopping - whether or not there is work that needs to be done or things we need to buy." -The Art of Frugal Hedonism: A Guide to Spending Less While Enjoying Everything More, Annie Raser-Rowland with Adam Grubb

Wow, Karen! I was unfamiliar with Wuzzles, but came here to post about chimera. They seem to be related!

Wuzzle- Disney cartoon character that is a mix of two different species that originally aired in 1985.

Chimera-
(1) An imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts. If capitalized, Greek monster with a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail
(2) An illusion or fabrication of the mind.
(3) An individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitution. (I am picturing the Jurassic Park dinosaurs)

"Really assess what you think works and is worthwhile in modern culture, and what you think other times and other peoples did better (or were better off without). Think about creating a chimera life based on your evaluation." - The Art of Frugal Hedonism: A Guide to Spending Less While Enjoying Everything More (again)... Here I am questioning whether chimera was really the best word choice with its connotations of unrealizable monstrosities, but it certainly is fun to imagine!

Shavuot (noun)
Jewish festival, aka "Festival of Weeks" or "Festival of Reaping." This is supposed to fall 7 weeks, or a "week of weeks" after Passover and marks when Moses received the the 10 commandments in 1312 BCE. It also marks the Israeli wheat harvest.

Fallon and I flipped the monthly calendar page over and discovered Shavuot happens today this year. We must have an Israeli climate here (give or take 2 degrees higher latitude) because Fallon has been busy in the yard with her kid scissors cutting and collecting all the seed heads off the really tall grass I failed to deep mulch in time. Her plan is to grind it in a molcajete and sell it for $0 at the end of the driveway as "flour." Fingers crossed some neighbors make the pilgrimage.

I had a stuffed animal of the the bumblebee thing in the center and my sister had the yellow one on the bottom left! Thanks for the trip down memory lane LOL!

Love the plant market! I hope Fallon finds a buyer for her flour :) I'm learning a lot from you Chris. I had to look up what a molcajete is. I know of a mortar and pestle but I had never heard of a molcajete before.

Monocausotaxophilia (noun) love of single causes that explain everything.

This was a term coined by Ernst Pöppel (1940-) as a joke but was popularized by others, i.e.

"Don't think the Gini coefficient [a mathematical measure of wealth inequality] alone will describe the situation, however; this would be succumbing to monocausotaxophilia, the love of single ideas that explain everything, one of humanity's most common cognitive errors. The Gini figures for Bangladesh and for Holland are nearly the same, for instance, at 0.31; but the average annual income in Bangladesh is about $2,000, while in Holland it's $50,000. The spread between richest and poorest is an important consideration, but when everyone in that spread is pretty well off, this is a different situation than when everyone across the spread is poor." -The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson

That particular episode of Winnie the Pooh is ingrained in my head. It was my son's favorite and I think we must have watched it almost everyday for years.

Woozles are weasel-like creatures in the Winnie the Pooh series that are known for stealing honey. They first appeared in A.A. Milne's 1926 book Winnie the Pooh, where Pooh and Piglet follow what they believe are woozle footprints. The two later realize they've been walking in circles and the footprints are their own.
Appearance:
Woozles first appeared physically in Disney's 1968 animated short Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. They resemble weasels and can transform into different shapes and sizes.
Behavior:
Woozles are often associated with heffalumps and are feared by Pooh and his friends, especially Piglet. They are deceitful and avid honey thieves.

Thanks, Denise! Wuzzles and woozles, oh my! I am learning about so many fantastic creatures on this thread!

Speaking of creatures, I am listening to a Master Gardener interview about a newly invasive Aedes genus mosquitoes. I thought I knew what "cryptic" meant but I had confined it to senses 2b and 5 below. This vector expert was using it more in the zoological sense number 3.

Cryptic (adj)

1. Secret, occult
2a. having or seeming to have a hidden or ambiguous meaning : mysterious
2b. marked by an often perplexing brevity
3. serving to conceal
4. not recognized
5. employing cipher or code

"Aedes are cryptic, they attach their single eggs to vessels or water-holding plants and those eggs can remain viable outside of the water for a long time. The females favor several shorter feedings and are more likely to approach from closer to the ground and be harder to detect."

Look! Some bovine bailiwicks!

Bailiwick [bey-luh-wick]

1. one's sphere of operations or particular area of interest.
2. the district or jurisdiction of a bailie (Scottish magistrate) or bailiff.

"Why people did what they did- that was her bailiwick." The Ministry for the Future, Kim Stanley Robinson

Thanks, Debbie! Yep, this is my last post. Farmgirl Grammar "intermediate" prescribes discovering new words daily for an additional two weeks, so maybe someone can help us with that?

This isn't a single word, but ever since my kid and I read the book, An Ambush of Tigers, I have been collecting surprising words that describe animal collectives.

Murder of crows
Conspiracy/unkindness of ravens
Parliament of owls
Convocation of eagles
Pandemonium of parrots
Council of toads
Maelstrom of salamanders
Shiver of sharks
Smack of jellyfish
Scurry of squirrels
Bloat of hippos
Crash of rhinos
Tower of giraffes
Clowder of cats
Sleuth of bears
Intrusion of cockroaches
Parade of elephants
Cauldron of bats
Business of ferrets or flies
Shadow of jaguars
Leap of leopards
Stand of flamingos
Barrel of monkeys

I then went down a rabbit hole looking for interesting Gen Z slang words that had achieved dictionary entry status when my husband suggested a final apocryphal animal collective:

a situationship of Karens!

Thank you so very much Chris for all the interesting words and stories you shared with us. You and Fallon must really enjoy all books, that is a wonderful thing. Children learn so much from us reading to them when they were little and then they started reading themselves. My Son Kent is 49 and when he was very little still in a crib we read stories to him . Now he is an avid reader just like his Mom:D
Looking forward to our next Wildflower sharing her words.
Thank you Heather and Chris.
