Let’s have some fun now!

The Critter of the month for October is Tarantula! Yep, that’s right Tarantula. Another very misunderstood Animal.

They are awesome Animals and if you have ever held one you would understand.

As usual I will have a give away for the Tarantula as well. But I will not post the winner of my giveaway when I draw the name. You will know you won when you get your package in the mail, then you can post photos and let the other Wildflowers know it was you who won.

What do you all know about Tarantulas? Love them or hate them. Let me know what you think. This should be a lively conversation:-)

This will be fun.

I will draw the name Oct. 15th.

Big Hugs,
Debbie

DebbieF, I was afraid that was what you would pick!! Just hear me now, I do not want to be in any drawing to win that thing! I always thought I wanted to visit Australia , until I read that they are native to that country, WHAT?!?! But now, DebbieK, are you telling me your son had one in his house in Oregon?!?!
Please tell me no, they really can’t be in the USA can they??? Oh my goodness, I am going to have nightmares about them tonight.

Now you know I would never give you a live tarantula, look at the soft little critters I have given already. Right Debbie, Chris and Karen. I give sweet cuddlely little things.

And I have held one even though I told 5 year old Michael that Granny Deb was not holding a tarantula but I did for him even though I was deadly afraid of spiders. Honestly I still am to this day but I held the tarantula in 2015 and it was awesome. I did not move my hand so Rosie did not move either. That was her name Rosie, a little doll:-)
Now this is not me holding the tarantula but it could have been

Great pick for October! I didn't realize they could live 30-40 years, up to 20 in captivity and survive on just water for 2 years. The only ones I have seen are the ones that are pets and I haven't been brave enough to hold them.

I'm the spider rescue-er in my household of testosterone! I used to name them when my boys were small, Billy Jean, Bobby Joe, Sarah Jane, etc... and I would rescue them as they made it inside our home and transplant it back outside. Today, my boys are 17 and 21 and I'm still called to rescue the lonely spider that made it inside and trailing the bedroom wall. Spiders have never bothered me, although, I've never held one larger than a quarter. Daddy long legs were always my favorite. Reptiles on the hand are a whole different story. If it slithers, count me out and running in the opposite direction. Thanks for the fun, Debbie!

That is so funny, April! Spiders don’t bother me either but I don’t have any desire to hold one. And ANYTHING in the reptile family is a BIG NO!!! I had to laugh when I heard about Seth finding the tarantula in his kitchen! He has always hated spiders and I was surprised that we couldn’t hear him scream all the way from Arizona! Haha

UGH! I'm sorry but those pictures and the words "let's have some fun" do not go together LOL! While I don't need rescued from them, I don't like them either. I find them creepy no matter what size they are. I try to let the ones outside do their thing, but if they make it into they house they're goners.

If I were Seth I think I'd move back to Oregon! I might become a screamer if I see a tarantula on the loose. And I probably wouldn't sleep for a week thinking that everything that touched me (like my long hair) was one of them.

Yeah I guess when you grow that big you do become animal status, instead of bug, insect, or arachnid!!
I think it’s all of those legs that make it creepy, I don’t care for Octopus either!! Four legs like our sweet pets is enough.

Tarantula Migration in Colorado

Hordes of tarantulas are descending on Southern Colorado? It’s not a nightmare — it’s tradition. Well, migration. The Colorado tarantula migration, to be exact. But what is an annual migration if not a tradition of traveling? Spider season has begun in our fair mountain state. It might come as a surprise to those of you who chose to live with dry, icy winters specifically to avoid gangs of roving arachnids, but Colorado is home to a rather cool spider phenomenon, the annual tarantula migration. It’s one of the many fall wonders in Southern Colorado and certainly one of the most unique. We’ve got the details on this wild wonder, including where to watch (or avoid) when the critters start crawling.

What is the Tarantula Migration?

Every year, beginning in September and running through October, the chillier temps signal to thousands of male Oklahoma brown tarantulas that it’s time to update their spider dating profiles and start hitting the streets in search of love. These amorous arachnids wander for miles in search of lady spiders hanging out patiently in their homes for their gentleman callers.

Brown tarantulas live in little burrows lined with webs with a narrow tunnel leading to the surface. That narrow part will be important later. They use the tunnel to leave the burrow and go on hunting excursions after dark. The females of the species live for well beyond a decade, with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department (OWD) noting that some can reach 30 years old or more.

The males, not so much. Most of them barely make it a year, per OWD. Apparently, traveling to find a mate comes with a lot of risks, like being picked off by wasps or run over by cars. And then there’s the fact that some of the females like to make the encounter a lunch date with their new boyfriend as the main entree. Remember the mention of narrow tunnels? Turns out they can be mighty tight when you’re trying to outrun your hungry spider spouse.

After mating, the male spider rushes off into the sunset (or onto the dinner table) and the female tarantula starts laying eggs and attaching them to the webs lining the burrow. The eggs hatch after about six to eight weeks and mom hangs with them until they leave and start their own little homes. That latter part only lasts a few days. Like all families, close quarters and potential cannibalism tend to make everyone catch the wanderlust pretty quick.
The Colorado tarantula migration is a fascinating and unique experience that everyone — even folks who are not fans of spider — should catch at least once. Happy tarantula tracking!

Big Hugs,
Debbie

I’m really learning something new! I guess I’ve been living under a rock, but I truly thought tarantulas only lived in foreign countries!!
