That sounds very interesting April! I can see why you came back to it a couple times.

Chris - It depends on what I'm reading as to how many books I read at a time. If I'm ready something that's more informational (like you mentioned Woe is I), I'd also read another book at the same time. I can only take so much of them at a time before I'm sound asleep! When I was reading Melania and Audrey's book it was just the one at a time.

I have finished Audrey's book and I would recommend it! She didn't really do any one big thing during the war, but rather she grew up under Nazi occupation. Which means, along with many others, she participated in many small acts that were part of the resistance. She had just turned 11 when the invasion happened and was 16 when it ended. I don't want to give too much away if you want to read it, but it's a very interesting view of the war.

Stone Yard Devotional's summary sounds kind of apocalyptic! Audrey's adolescence definitely was!

I am glad others skim magazines and crafting books for just what they need. It never quite feels like I earned the right to say I "read" these, but in reality, I've probably spent more time with them and engaged with parts of them more actively.

So true to Debbie F. and Heather-- I will do a couple non-fiction books and add a lighter fictional read for "dessert" but if I were trying to read several fiction titles at a time, I would get the plots confused.

I love to skim magazines and craft books - especially before bed when I am winding down. I recently discovered that Libby lets me read magazines online - which is fun - but definitely not the same as holding the actual magazine. I just have too many magazines "saved" just in case - and craft books is a whole other problem. I love to look for them at thrift shops, estate sales and quilt guild destash sales. I can't pass up bargain craft books.

I do read more than one book at a time - usually I have an actual fiction and non-fiction book next to my bed and then I'll usually have an e-book from Libby on my phone. I save audio books for long car trips.

Currently I am reading TumTum and Nutmeg - adventures of two little mice - this is my audition for reading to Caroline. She's 4 and ready for chapter books but I want to pick the right ones. I have been reading Brambly Hedge to her - what a lovely book with amazing illustrations. I read to her long distance with Facetime - usually during her dinner. Gives her parents a little break at the end of a long day and she seems to be enjoying it. I read a few pages and then show her the pictures when they appear. I also started a private youtube channel just for her and have been recording me and other family members reading books there. I've got some sweet ones of my dad reading to her. But I'm not really sure how often my daughter pulls it up for her - they are not big on screen time. Today we read two stories from Brambly Hedge and she sat still almost until the end. She loved the word mysterious and kept repeating it - too fun!

Laura, I love that you think of it as "auditioning." What a fun way to use technology to connect; a private youtube channel is so clever, I've never heard of that but can picture what a fun time capsule that might be for her to rediscover when she is older. Several of my screen time-averse parent friends and family swear by Yoto players. They are a screen-free MP3 player and they sell blank soundcards so you can record yourself reading and upload to customize your own audiobook. However, at her age, she probably *really* prefers to be able to see the mysterious pictures and it must be way more gratifying for you to be able to see how long she stays engaged. Let us know how your tradition goes!

I wanted to share with all of you this wonderful children’s book I just read. I bought it for my little nephew Wally.
It’s called “The World Needs The Wonder You See” by Joanna Gaines. She and her husband Chip are the stars of Fixer Upper and have 4 Children.
Here is what she wrote at the beginning of the book:

I absolutely love the book and I cannot wait to read it to Wally when they come in July. As I want to read the Wonder in Wally’s eyes as we explore the outdoors, the park and the animal Safari. The book is wonderful and for all ages even this 70 year old. And I hope I never lose the Wonder of our surroundings and wherever we travel:-)

Big Hugs,
Debbie

Oh I will definitely look for that book - thanks for the recommendation.

I just finished The Adventures of Mary Darling - a very fun read. It's a mash up of Sherlock Holmes and Peter Pan.

Moving on to The Harvey Girl - a new mystery series.

Will keep you posted!

I have not forgotten the prizes for joining the "book club". My embroidery machine decided it doesn't want to work right now. Once I get it sorted out, or decide on something different, I'll be busy making them.

I am reading A Rose of Savannah series by Jenny Elaine. It is Historical Fiction of a True story of a Serial Killer in Savannah GA during the 1940’s. The first book is The Healing of Rose Savannah. I love that it is in the 1940’s but it goes to 1965 then the ‘20’s, I just love books that go back in time. Now the book is right in the middle of the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor and Savannah is a nurse. Just so good.

No hurry on my end, Heather! I'm just happy to see this corner of the board buzzing.

These all sound so fun. I ended up reading The Wonder You See to myself (kiddo was very busy transferring all the cabbage looper caterpillars into her butterfly tent for closer inspection, so I think maybe she already understood). It was delightful!

I have book #3 of World Made by Hand propped on my walking pad/treadmill as incentive to take a short chapter and stretch my legs a bit. It is post-collapse speculative fiction, so even though it is in the future, it draws a lot on pre-industrial revolution historical fiction.

Fal and I have been working through Yuval Harari's Unstoppable Us trilogy+. It might be a little early for Wally's next visit, but introduces some fascinating theories about anthropology at an accessible level to elementary schoolers. Fal's school covers world history in 4 year cycles and this would be great right before they open the cycle with Mesopotamian civilizations. I remember loving Harari's adult books on the same subject, but they require a bit too much time and focus for this season in life.

Heather, I would also like to join your book club! I just started earning the Biliophile Badge as well.

For your challenge, I just finished The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. I found it to be fairly light reading and highly entertaining in a quaint, very British sort of way. Some fun twists and turns, and the mystery kept me guessing until the end.

Also, as part of earning my intermediate badge, I will be starting a new topic to issue a reading challenge of my own, so everyone be sure to check that out and join if you like!

Heather, I am also a little late to joining the chat, but I recently finished the book The Girl in the Woods by Lorna Dounaeva. I really enjoyed this book and I love how it was written by a British author and some of there unique phrases and language came out. It's a psychological thriller about a couple who adopt a young girl and try to adjust with getting to know each other. Some suspenseful things occur that point towards the new child. Now the mother needs to figure out who to trust. The story felt fast paced which I like and also kept me on the edge of my seat.

I just finished a 2 book series of Historical Fiction, it is based on a true story of a serial killer in Savannah Georgia. Now I will say we lived for 10 years in Savannah and I never heard the story of the Serial Killer from the 1930’s. It went Back and forth between the 1930’s -1965 and I really enjoy that. The books were wonderful and so interesting, quick reads too. I got a little homesick reading about Savannah and things I loved and am so familiar with. All the wonderful squares etc. just so much history.
Ginny I just finished the 2nd book so I will send it next week.

Debbie

Hooray, more readers!

I love Ginny's idea of a round robin on sisters hosting reading challenges since I got stuck on how to proceed with that badge requirement as well.

I am wrapping up the last of Kunstler's World Made by Hand series- speculative fiction about an upstate New York society in the near-future after the collapse of civilization. Since my 42nd bday is the month, I am planning to revisit the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series to enjoy that "42" punchline one more time. The first time I got my hands on the series, I didn't read them in chronological order and missed a lot of the inside jokes that build on the previous books.

I'm looking for a new good book to read. Maybe I can find an historical fiction set in the Revolutionary times.

Heather, I agree! I love reading challenges and am looking forward to seeing others put up challenges too! Especially if it helps with badge earning. And I see nothing wrong with overlapping challenges either, if possible. For example, currently one could absolutely use the same book to complete both yours and my challenge!

Debbie, if you do decide to read a book involving the Revolution, please consider looking at my America 250 Challenge thread!
