First year for hollyhocks....of course no blooms but can't wait for next year. In the meantime.....do we cut them back as other perinials (sp?), or what?? I'm thinking they are going to look worse and worse as winter comes along!! Also, can I divide in the spring?? I thought I was a pretty good "flower gardener" but this has me stumped!!

Thanks so much Sherrye.....I was pretty sure I should cut those dead leaves and stems out.....no blooms this past summer as it was their first year.....but I will pass on the seeds as I have a small yard, and still tons of seeds that were given me initially, so will throw them in the ground come spring!! Thank you for the offer, just the same!!

yes cut the dead leaves and stalks off. you will see the crown green up at the base with new leaves. the stalks with seeds should be put where they can freeze thru winter and plant early spring, very early spring. barely cover seed with soil.they will sprout when temp is right. birds will eat the seeds if they can get to them spring or winter. hope this helps sherrye if you want seeds i have a ruffle red and a single pink be glad to send some your way.i have lots of other seeds if anyone is interested. mostly flowers this time of year. just give a shout |

Hey Grace~~I think I remember you saying you got some Hollyhock seeds this past summer, I remember being envious!!Miss you too!!So, nobody really said.....do I cut the old brown ugly leaves out, or what??!!

I love Hollyhocks too, the "Rufflier" the better! My only problem is they grow TOO WELL here! I was actually pulling them up this past Summer because they were growing all along the flower beds on the side of the house and coming up through my rosebushes. They were so crowded and messy looking. When the seed pods formed the tall plants were so heavy they were leaning over onto the sidewalk. We could barley walk on it! My husband took a pair of loppers to them (GASP!! The man is a MENACE with garden tools!!!!) I hate to pull them out, but sometimes you really CAN have too much of good thing....

Oh dear, and to think I rustled some Hollyhock seeds while up at the Buggy Barn this past summer....so I guess i will go toss them out in the garden off to one side...& keep my fingers crossed that tey will sprout next summer.

hi there, hollyhocks have a tap root and resent being moved. in spring when they sprout from seeds you can lift enuff soil with the baby to move it carefully to new spot. seeds need to be frozen for awhile before planted. i leave mine on the stock. they can look good with snow on them. or you can cut back to crown. they are a semi evergreen in most areas. i love them. in spring on a gentle day i grab the seed heads and scatter on ground, barely cover. i kick the dirt around and they grow.you can cut the stocks and put aside as long as they freeze some. then spread in spring. my garden grows inspite of me at the learn as we go silk purse farm happy days sherrye |

I agree that saving the seeds and sprinkling them around where you want next fall is better then dividing new hollyhocks. They are really beautiful, "Peaches 'N Dreams" are my favorite variety.

Mine just come back year after year and I don't do much to them.In the fall I will take the seeds from the dead flowers and sprinkle them in other areas I want them to grow and they always come up.
