My DH had put lettuce seed in a planter in the new hoop house he made this fall and when we got home this afternoon, the lettuce is up and green in the walk in hoop house!! And we have had snow while we were gone. How great is that. He put a 50 gallon black barrel full of water in there to hold the heat and that is all that we have done. May have to put an little electric heater out there if it gets too cold. Love it!!! keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.

N@n	Posted - Jan 11 2010 : 4:21:58 PM My husband gleaned issues of several mags and on the internet and came up with a plan based on the row covers. But in the Jan.Feb 2010 issue of Hobby Farms is a good article about hoop houses and covers and based on Elliot Coleman's ideas. I have not seen The Winter Harvest Handbook but I really like Elliot Coleman so I may hunt for it and add it to the garden library. Good luck. Our lettuce is still alive but not growing very fast but we have had brutally cold weather for over a week. Today was a wonderful respite with temps near 50. My husband could not stay in the hoop house long today. It was too Hot. What fun We should be eating lettuce fromthe garden soon/ keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.

It is 0 here and we have lots of snow too. Hard for me to imagine growing anything outside right now! Enjoy your salads! Dawn in IL
N@n	Posted - Jan 02 2010 : 5:46:13 PM Hey Dawn, My Husband built a "hoop House" from Pvc pipe and fencing to keep the deep from devouring our produce. For winter he covered it with clear plastic for a greenhouse. I am not good at describing so will try to take a picture and post it for you to see. It really works out well for us. Don't know how long the plastic will last, hopefully for a couple of years. N@n in Ark keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.
