Has anyone started plants that way, by taking cuttings and then rooting them, If so, tell me how to do it PLEASE....

Jonni, it's a wonder any stray Rose of Sharon plants in your yard don't just up and die from your 'withering gaze'!!!! :D

Ha! Up here, in No. Kentucky, all you have to do is let the Rose of Sharon pods fall onto the ground--INSTANT rose of sharon!!! :)

Hi, Debbie Sue! Last summer, I just put the cuttings in pots until they were rooted. When they put out leaves, they're ready to go in the ground. I just turn the pot over, tap it, and just put the whole dirt ball in the ground. They're a pretty hardy plant.

Miss Bee Haven!! I am going to try this !! My Hubby LOVES The Rose Of Sharon shrub...and I have had such a hard time getting one to take off and grow....Maybe I can get a cutting from someome and try.....Do you leave it in water until it sprouts some roots? Thanks so much! DebbieSue |

Well, Terri, last year I rooted lots of Rose of Sharon from cuttings and I've done roses crepe myrtle. I put the cuttings in a bucket or vase of water and when I'm ready to put one in a pot or in the ground, I cut it again, usually on a slant to give more surface area and dip the end in a rooting hormone and flick any excess off with my finger. Then just put it in the pot. If I'm rooting a rose in the fall, I cover it with a glass jar and leave it until spring. I'm planning to try to root some roses in May this year. An old gardening friend once told me that if I root a rose in May, I'd have blooms the same season. It worked for me the one time I tried that. :)
