Posted - Jan 21 2010 : 10:35:20 AM I'm going to create and plant a garden space for my chickens by their coop. They get to till and fertilize it. :-) I'll plant the seeds and cover it up with mesh until the plants grow, then they get to harvest it. What kinds of plants would you suggest for the garden? I know veggie and herbs would be a hit but are there specific plants that would stand up to some chicken nibbling and come back for more?

Posted - Jan 30 2010 : 04:56:37 AM Something that I did for my girls last summer, take planters ( anything that is long) and planted a mix in each one. Then as they were "ready" I would place them along side the pen an they would put their heads through the fence to feed on whatever they liked in the planters.
This way I could keep things growing and by having several at different stages, they would always have an "Afternoon Treat". One other note, they LOVE all the weeds I pulled from the garden. Dump a big pile in the middle of the pen and within the hour it was all gone!

Posted - Jan 25 2010 : 12:05:43 PM The Feb/Mar 2010 issue of Mother Earth News has an article about growing poultry feed. There is some good information in there about garden cover crops and weeds that chickens like. FYI

Posted - Jan 22 2010 : 07:07:09 AM If they gobble it all up, I'm ok with that. If they eat their veggies, then I'm eating their veggies, so it is all good. I think i'll try to find fast sprouting stuff that I can just keep replenishing.

Posted - Jan 22 2010 : 06:43:35 AM What a clever idea. Knowing my chickens, They would go right through any fresh vegatation in minutes. I made a mistake last year. The chicks would go in the garden but never touch the cherry tomatoes. Then I started feeding them the occassional tomatoe, just to see if they would eat them. Not only do they eat them, they make a beeline for the tomatoes the minute they hit the garden. Like me, they like them fresh from the vine. Who says you can't train a chicken? Let us know how it goes, Carol

Posted - Jan 21 2010 : 7:57:30 PM I wonder if mesh would be enough to protect your garden, my "girls" are vicious with their scratching and have gone through my bark and weed cloth in NO time at all... their claws are so strong...

Posted - Jan 21 2010 : 6:50:28 PM I don't know that chickens just "nibble" :) They make pretty fast work of spinach, that's for sure. And there's nothing left to come back.
