I cannot get the search engine to work on the site right now, so wanted to ask if any of you know about asparagus beans? My husband thought he was buying me asparagus, and got the beans instead. I'm thinking I could plant them in containers against a chain link fence. We are in Fort Worth Texas, and I hear they like the heat....

We loved these and I plan to plant them again for the fall garden!
Very tasty beans, lovely flowers ... my favorite climbing bean thus far. :)

Thanks MrsAmy ... that sounds great. My hubby thought he was buying asparagus, but yes, I have seen them called yard long beans. I'm excited to see if they work. It will be fun to have something I grew myself. I used to do it all the time growing up, my dad had a garden, but just haven't worked it into my schedule here. I'm starting slow with sweet onions, rosemary, basil, lemon balm, mint, cat mint, dill, and cilantro. We also have a tomato and some some strawberries. We'll see how it goes,

Are those the same as the yard long beans? We've planted them in my son's garden for years...got some seed from my SIL and we've planting 'em ever since. We love 'em. I thought they would be tough, but they are yummy roasted like asparagus (never drew a connection til now) with olive oil, salt and pepper. It's amazing how fast the beans grow once they blossom. They look like little green worms sticking out of the blossom and then whammo you've got these huge beans!

The beans are planted and we will see how they do. I did two plants under a tomato cage and the rest in pots along the fence.

Jane,
I would try growing them on the fence if that was the only space I had, too! Just consider it an experiment  .
If there is a Lowe's near you, I bought asparagus on clearance yesterday. They came in a cute little burlap bag, too!
I'll let you know how the beans do for me, it will be fun to compare notes!

Oh, and Catherine, if you'll keep me posted on how they do down there, I'll keep you posted on how they do up here :) It will be fun. I might even post a picture, if I can figure out how to do that.

That is a really good point about cutting the vines off the fence...I hadn't considered that. Hmm. I really don't have a place to grow them as I have a small herb garden and a flower bed, no actual garden space. Maybe I'll just take the risk of growing them on the fence, and then either never do it again, or be pleasantly surprised at how easy they come off? I'm being naive aren't I?

I am growing them for the first time this year, too. I live a couple of hours south of you in Temple,Texas  .
I'm planning to grow them in the children's garden on a wire arch, which will make a tunnel for the kids (big and small) to crawl through.
As far as growing them on a chain-link fence ... they may be a pain to remove at the end of the season. I did that with Morning Glories once and it wasn't fun cutting and pulling all the vines out of the fence when I needed to relocate the containers.

They are also call Japanese long beans. I think i ve had them at Pei Wei
