I transplanted my 4 HUGE tomato plants to the garden today and when I drug the hose over to water I accidentally drug the hose right over the top of two of them! I know I killed on for sure because it snapped the stem off right at that soil. Darn it! :(
Luckily I have more seedlings waiting to be planted but still!

They seem to be doing fine! The one that got compeletely broken off has been the first to put out flowers! I am very happy they survived!

Soooo, did the tomatoes make it? ??? Did the one that got decapitated re-root? I plant mine sideways so they can root from where the leaves were, so I'm hoping yours turned out okay. Reading this thread is like watching a soap-opera and missing the final show!!!

That's a good idea. I am thinking of sinking some t-posts and building a fence around the garden anyway. Sky and Nora love to play in the garden which is fine right now when it is only half planted...

Yes i hate it when i do that! i put conduit at the ends of my beds so it will run along those instead of coming up over the top of my plants!

My cousin worked at a commercial grower and when they would trim the tomato plants, he would bring the trimmings to our granny and she would stick them in a bucket of water for a day or so until she had time to plant them. She would stick most of the stem in the ground and they would grow new plants. These were her late tomatoes and they did great.
Even the one that is snapped off may still grow!

I will try it gals- I did stick them back in the ground and mound it up. I will try to do more splinting tonight. I think the one that is completely severed might be a goner though.

I have had success with staking them from both sides kinda splint like, then piling the dirt up real high and wide around them. They look horrible for about a week, then start perking up. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.

You can always try sticking the broken part in the ground (the top) to see if it will send out new roots! Tomatoes root really easily from the stems...I'd give it a try, anyway. :0)

Oh, I'm sorry Alee - I did something similar - I was out hoeing up the beds that I hadn't planted yet and I hoed the potato bed that was planted - they just hadn't sprouted out of the ground. I figured it out before I did too much but still - makes me feel like a murderer:(

Alee, that tomatoe may just bounce back if the roots are strong. Just let it be and see what happens.

well sometimes this is how things are. i planted 10 tomato plants in bigger pots. they had gotten too tall. i broke off trying to bury the stems deep. it was the same ah oh feeling. now look what i did. gads. i am good at dragging hoses over things and popping their little heads off. i move way too fast. its good you have more seeds and time. we get one good shot at summer for about 2 months then we are back to cold nights. i gotta get it all in now. so i got myself some help coming today. hope all is well with you. happy days sherrye

Thanks ladies! I originally started I think 40 seedlings and I started some more cherry tomatoes. I have already had a casualty of 12 because of a late frost, so I guess I am lucky that I started so many! LOL

Darn! I hate that. I do that alot too. You might need to get something taller and strong to put at the end where the hose will go around the plants. Like a fence post or big stick. So sorry that happened but it does happen way too many times to all of us at one time or another. I have a love-hate relationship with my hoses. I have to drag them all over and something gets knocked over or I get kniks or it gets stuck or run over.

Oh no Alee! Im so sorry :( I hope the other one survives and that your other seedlings will all work out. I purposefully plant too many of everything because I know somethings going to get ruined somehow. It always happens. Sounds like you have the same idea. My hubby was thinking I was crazy this year starting 16 tomato plants. Well, I'm already down to 12 and decided to plant 9 of them this last weekend. I have three still on the sun porch and if the ones in the garden have transplanted alright I will give the extra three away.

Oh Alee- I am so sorry to hear that- but hey- we've all been there- all had that moment when we've said "Oh man, why'd I just do that?"
