After planting several rows of spinch in two of my raised beds-I have discovered spinach does not AGREE with me-I was up at 3:00 this morning until almost 5:00 in complete and utter AGONY-Stomach cramps, perspiration above my upper lip---You get the picture--
I have never had a reaction to spinach before and I just LOVE it in salads-Oh well! So now what do I do with all my nice leafy ready to harvest spinach?
Any ideas?? I just hate to see it go to waste........

Sounds like e-coli from the chicken manure
i'd toss it back to the chickens and stick to plain 'ole garden compost.
Hate to think you would have to go throguh and episode like that again! |

I think I am done with spinach---which is a terrible shame because there is soooo much of it in my raised beds. I even staggered a planting so that it would extend even longer during the summer. I am almost afraid to give it away-Do you think it has something to do with the chicken fertilizer I used? Gosh that would be bad-Maybe I should just pull it and toss it into the compost?

Ditto what Julie said. I have heard a lot of stores about spinach and e coli. I usually freeze it and cook it. No problems. Although, like Amy was saying, my husband cannot tolerate lettuce. He gets terrible digestive upset from it.

Melody, that does sound like a bad food poisoning. I hope you are ok now. Just be very careful. Have you tried any cooked yet?

I have irritable bowels on and off. Sometimes spinach is ok then other times I am in pain for days. Lettuce or salad has the same effect.

Actually, just about 10 days before I treated myself to a spinach salad at a local restaurant-same thing happened...I am positive it is the spinach, but I never knew that compost that hasn't aged contains e-coli? Makes a lot of sense when you think about it and I'll remember that. Great advice....Thank you!

Are you sure it was actually the spinach? Are you using compost on you garden that contains any manure? Compost that is not properly aged (at least120 days) before being used in a garden can containe a lot of harmful bacteria such as e.coli and others. Greens are especially likely to catch these from tainted soil. Also I wouldn't rule out other foods you may have eaten. If you have had spinach before without problems it is likely something else.
