Posted - Jun 29 2010 : 08:49:53 AM My zucchini plants are GIANT with gorgeous flowers all over them. But NO zukes are coming behind those flowers. What's going on?? Same with all my cucumbers plants - tons of flowers, but we aren't seeing any actual cukes come. Ideas? Solutions?

Posted - Jun 29 2010 : 3:09:18 PM You can eat both the male and female flowers. The male flowers are very numerous at first, then the female flowers follow. The female flowers have a swelling at the base of it. This is where the fruit/veggie/whatever forms. As long as you have plenty of bees, flies, and wasps helping you out, you should have plenty of cukes/squash/pumpkins to harvest! Yes, Brenda, I'd imagine if you ate them all, you'd have no squash, lol, though squash is so numerous, surely it can hurt to sacrifice a few!

Posted - Jun 29 2010 : 1:30:14 PM OHH!!!! So, is it the male flowers on the squash plants that people eat? I wanted to try squash blossoms this year, but I was afraid that if I ate all the blossoms I wouldn't have any squash left!!!

Posted - Jun 29 2010 : 10:39:05 AM Thanks for explaining that to me. I had always thought that wherever a flower was, a veggie would follow. Guess you learn something everyday!

Posted - Jun 29 2010 : 09:57:44 AM Usally the first flowers to come on a zucchini plant are the male flowers. Same with all of the squash family. Give it a few weeks and you will have both male and female flowers, followed by an abundance of zucchini! The females will actually have a tiny fruit just below the flower, the males just have all stem. Solution- just be patient.
