Any one know where you can get a supply of big burlap bags? I am looking for some to keep weeds down in the garden. I don't know who even uses them any more. Thanks, Carol

That is a great idea for chicken feed bags. I have been ripping them and adding to my compost when it gets a little too wet or to the worm bins, but I find myself with more than I know what to do with. Thanks for the idea:)

I use newspaper. Thick sections of it. (8, 10, 12 sheets at a time.) And then I top it with hay, straw or decorative mulch. So far it's kept the weeds down wonderfully and the ones that do pop through are easy to pull quickly.
If you're worried about colored ink in newspapers, I recently read somewhere that very little paper ink, colored or otherwise, is toxic anymore. Given everything else that can be toxic in a garden, I decided not to worry about it in the micro doses that the newsprint might be contributing.

I use feed bags from the chicken feed. I have seen the burlap bags at rural king.

Kerianne, I have seen that, I was looking for cheap bags to re purpose to keep weeds down. I read a recent article about some one who did that and want to try it. Thank you though, Carol

...do they have to be bags?... The reason I ask, I used to work in JoAnn's Fabrics... they have sold burlap on the bolt.... might be a possibility?

You can buy them at Tractor Supply. The store in our area has them next to all of the axes and all of the sharpening supplies. Hope you found some:)

u may also ask for a weed fabric, usually black water can go thru but stops weeds from coming up, work at a garden center and that is what we use in ma. |

I lucked out and traded some cardboard for a bunch but I did see them for sale at the garden store here. I don't think a lot of people do still use them - the guy I got them from has a fair-trade import business and that is what the stuff gets packed in coming from Nepal. Any import businesses in your neck of the woods?
