Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 8:18:25 PM I agree that it is the heat that makes it bitter... I believe it is referred to as "bolting" We had that happen here on Long Island as well with our record heat we've been having! Laurie- Farmgirl Sister#1403

Posted - Jul 20 2010 : 08:13:00 AM lettuce and kohl crops like cabbage are cool loving plants. heat triggers them to bolt and flower. save your seed and it will be a stronger variety for your garden. if you used true seeds not hybrids. just a thought happy days sherrye

Posted - Jul 20 2010 : 07:21:00 AM The heat is what did it to my. We had sudden heat. Cool one day and then super hot the next. The lettuce was yucky very quickly.

Posted - Jul 19 2010 : 11:54:14 AM The heat will do it every time. I have some bibb lettuce that was wonderful one day and bitter the next...last week. ugh! I am hating what this heat has done for my salad greens!! Time to start some new seedlings indoors for me.

Posted - Jul 19 2010 : 11:41:00 AM Lots of things can do that. The amount of water, fertilizer, heat, and some types get that way just before they bolt. Mine went bitter about 2 weeks ago.
